Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sometimes the cancellation of a TV show is only announced after the final episodes of the last season have been filmed. Which often means the writers, directors, actors, etc. haven't been able to tie up all the threads they had been working.
