The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Breumaster's picks: 01. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Reason: "I ever loved the wild style and the look of the movie. The atmosphere feels rough like in not many other western and it's packed with intriguing characters who try to survive in a threatening historical war setting that looks real and rough over the whole runtime, underlined by the mindblowing score of Ennio Morricone. Time flies by while watching."

    TsarStepan's picks: 01. Casablanca (1942)

Reason: "A case for Casablanca: Humphrey Bogart has given us, Rick Blaine ... the greatest antihero in cinema. It's also one of the most delightfully quotable films ever created. What a bittersweet romance with the brilliant chemistry between Humphrey Bogart's Rick and Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa Lund."

    Late Spring (1949)

    Son_of_albstein's picks: 01. Late Spring (1949)

Reason: "This film is about the oppositions between family and individual, modernity versus tradition, but most of all, the smiling surface versus the depths of feeling that are mostly hidden from our view. And this is a more powerful source for compassion than emotional outbursts in other movies."

    Ikiru (1952)

    NDbportmanfan's picks: 01. Ikiru (1952)

Reason: "Takashi Shimura gives such an incredible performance, his facial expressions matched with the dreary tone made it impossible not to feel for him. The story is something we can all relate to in some way or another and it is told so well that we are left with a great deal to contemplate after the credits roll."

    Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

urbanemovies' picks: 01. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Reason: "Most of these movies have been my favorite classic movie at one time or another, but Lawrence of Arabia (1962) has probably held the distinction for me the longest. As with most of David Lean's masterpieces, it excels in just about every way one can measure a film. The film has aged well over the past fifty years; it remains an impressive work, even by modern-day standards. The almost four hour epic is so well-made, one oddly doesn't want it to ever end."

    02. Cool Hand Luke (1967) 03. Citizen Kane (1941) 04. It's a Wonderful Life (1946) 05. Fort Apache (1948) 06. Captains Courageous (1937) 07. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) 08. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Ardan Türzünsoy's picks: 01. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Reason: "I don't consider The Good, The Bad & The Ugly as the best film ever, but for me it's certainly the most beautiful-looking film ever, therefore my favorite from the pre-1970 era. What also appeals to me is the universal theme. Even though there's a war going around them, these three men are only concerned about one thing: gold. In other words, themselves. I also like the fact that (despite the stereotyping title) all three main characters are far from stereotypes. Add that to the best musical score of all times, and you've got an endlessly enjoyable masterpiece."

    02. 12 Angry Men (1957) 03. Army of Shadows (1969) 04. Seven Samurai (1954) 05. Midnight Cowboy (1969) 06. Citizen Kane (1941) 07. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) 08. The Last Laugh (1924) 09. On the Waterfront (1954) 10. The Gold Rush (1925)

    Paths of Glory (1957)

    otter68's picks: 01. Paths of Glory (1957)

Reason: "It's brilliantly acted by Douglass, Menjou, and Macready. It's a gripping story, beautifully told and shot by Stanley Kubrick. The ending scene is very moving and poignant and shows the sorrow and pain of war. "

    02. The Searchers (1956) 03. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) 04. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 05. Animal Crackers (1930) 06. The Magnificent Seven (1960) 07. Citizen Kane (1941) 08. Going My Way (1944) 09. The Grapes of Wrath (1940) 10. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

    Bicycle Thieves (1948)

    Hoekkie's picks: 01. Bicycle Thieves (1948)

Reason: "This movie is about a bike that’s stolen. That’s it, nothing more. I love the simplicity of this story. It’s a very realistic and touching movie."

    02. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 03. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) 04. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) 05. Brief Encounter (1945) 06. For a Few Dollars More (1965) 07. The Hole (1960)

pechofifteenpolls' picks: 01. The Hole (1960)

Reason: "It's a film about a group of prisoners making a hole in an attempt to escape, but what sounds like a slow and maybe boring plot is actually a cinematic jewell where everything works to leave you totally inmersed with the film, and also having a powerfull social commentary. Movies show its magic when they create something so great out of something apparently so simple."

    02. On the Waterfront (1954) 03. All About Eve (1950) 04. Inherit the Wind (1960) 05. Singin' in the Rain (1952) 06. The Wages of Fear (1953) 07. Casablanca (1942) 08. The Grand Illusion (1937) 09. I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) 10. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

    The Ox-Bow Incident (1942)

    rubyfruit76's picks: 01. The Ox-Bow Incident (1942)

Reason: "One of the most sobering and potent morality tales in any medium, it has a humanity that many other Westerns miss and instead of glorifying violence and machismo, The Ox-Bow Incident criticizes both. It is also a searing commentary on topically relevant group-think. Henry Fonda shines in this beautiful and dark, yet life-affirming, film."

    02. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) 03. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) 04. Rear Window (1954) 05. On the Waterfront (1954) 06. Elevator to the Gallows (1958) 07. Double Indemnity (1944) 08. The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) 09. Tokyo Story (1953) 10. Bonnie and Clyde (1967) (no particular order)
