The Movies That Knew Too Much
"The answer my friend, is blowin' the whistle..." Steven Spielberg's upcoming (and anticipated) The Post (2017) seems like a solid companion to famous "whistle-blowing" movies like recent Best Picture winner Spotlight (2015) or the classic All the President's Men (1976). Tom Hanks even reprised the role of Ben Bradlee that earned Jason Robards an Oscar in 1977. There is a reason why whistle-blowing movies are so inspirational (and a bit Oscar-baity): they deal with the struggles of everyday heroes or heroines, fictional or real, triumphant or tragic, who had the courage to jeopardize their lives by revealing hidden injustices, unveiling shocking scandals or asking controversial questions... here's one that won't be too controversial for once. Which of these whistle-blowing movies is your favorite? After voting, discuss the list here
When Life Gives You Lemons... Watch a Jack Lemmon Movie
Jack Lemmon's formidable talent and craft included his range: he could do drama and comedy with equal success. Filmmakers took notice and cast him in so many different kinds of roles that Lemmon's great versatility became part of his appeal among audiences: when we're down and want to feel understood or gain insight, we can watch one of his dramas; when we're down and want to be distracted and laugh, we can cheer up with one of his comedies. No matter what life gives you, there's a Jack Lemmon film to help. Which of his performances have you most appreciated? Discuss Jack Lemmon or the poll here. This poll is dedicated to one of Jack Lemmon's biggest fans, the distinguished metallurgical engineer, John "Jack" Kearns, who died in April of 2019. Except for the first five options, the list is in alphabetical order by title of the film or series.
Road Trip! 1980+ Edition
You get to tag along a road trip with one of the following groups - which one do you choose? Not (necessarily) the best or your favorite movie - it's the group you'd most like to hang out a few days on their road trip. Inspired by http://www.imdb.com/list/-sZYHX7NdC8/ You get to (roughly) experience what they experienced in the movie (for better or worse). To keep it to a reasonable number of items, I am applying the following constraints: * There are at least two "central" characters but no more than three people already on the road trip, you are the 3rd (or 4th, * The movie is about an era that is 1980s or more recent. * The main characters spend a fair amount of time in a vehicle. * Are live action and not science fiction/fantasy (not animated or puppets) Because the list is limited to 35 items, there are valid entries that would probably not be plausible choices for anyone (e.g. they're basically awful or horrific experiences), so I've roughly chosen the more popular entries by moviemeter. RIP: Wilford Brimley — A True Natural
Veteran character actor Wilford Brimley, probably best known as one of the stars of Ron Howard's wonderful sci-fi classic Cocoon (1985) and the Barry Levinson film, The Natural (1984) starring Robert Redford, has passed away this August 1st, 2020. Wilford decided at a rather late age of 34 to try out acting. This was because he had gained weight and could not perform in rodeos anymore! He found work almost immediately as an extra in the movie True Grit (1969) starring John Wayne. Then shortly after, TV and movies came a calling. He would end up being in several high profile movies. This quote by Wilford probably best sums up his "Natural" acting style and the reason for his popularity. "I just try to be myself." Well, when you're a very likable fellow, "being yourself" can have its advantages! Thank you Wilford. Condolences to all of Wilford's family. We will miss him too. Which movie with Wilford co-starring in it is your favorite? After voting, please discuss here.

70s Paranoid Thriller Films
In the 1970s, particularly in the shadow of Watergate and general disillusion with the government or corporate establishment, there was a particular genre of thrillers which became popular, that involved various shadowy conspiracies. These could involve the government (or secret rogue groups within the government), corporations, or other nebulous groups of powerful people behind the scenes. Often a lone person (or very small group of people) will see or notice something that puts him or her on the trail of such a conspiracy. This person could be an intrepid reporter, or a small-time cop or sheriff, or a private investigator. Often this person has no clue at first what he's getting himself into, but as his curiosity peels back more layers of the onion, he'll suddenly find a stray bullet whizzing by him, or some other grave threat to his health coming from the shadows. This will almost always stiffen his resolve to find out what's going on, and the race is on for him to gather enough evidence to expose the truth before his newfound foes end him. His success in that race isn't always guaranteed. Which of these "paranoid thrillers" of the 70s intrigued or frightened you the most? Discuss here
10 Years After Katrina: The Film Disaster Most Due to Human Error
The end of August is the ten year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the tragic flooding of New Orleans. Most experts agree that Katrina was influenced by human behavior and certainly the catastrophic damage to New Orleans was largely due to human failure to prepare and react effectively; the films on this list also illustrate human error or negligence. If human beings can prevent some devastating effects of otherwise (or seemingly) natural disasters, films on the subject can be instructive. Which of the following movies depict the most egregious human error? Discuss here
