Forbidden Planet (1956)
The crew of the C-57D en route to the planet Altair IV receive a transmission warning them to stay away.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A small crew of five aboard the ship Discovery One are bound for Jupiter to investigate a strange signal coming from the planet.
Earth begins receiving strange transmissions from the crew of a manned science space station orbiting the planet Solaris. Dr. Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate what is wrong with the crew and why progress of their work has stalled. A weird movie that may seem dated to some.
The crew of the Nostromo are awoken from stasis on their return trip home. Under orders from the corporate organisation they work for to investigate a strange signal of unknown origin.
A continuation of the story told in 2001: A Space Odyssey. This time a joint USA/Soviet mission aboard the soviet ship Alexei Leonov investigate what happened to Discovery One and continue to unravel the mystery behind the signal sent from this region of our solar system.
A continuation of the movie Alien. This time it is the loss of signal from a long established colony settlement on L-V426. Ripley, the only survivor of the Nostromo is brought back to L-V426 aboard the Sulaco with a fully armed crew of marines to investigate.
Event Horizon (1997)
A human starship "The Event Horizon" thought lost amongst the stars is discovered in our own solar system in decaying orbit around Neptune. The vessel Lewis and Clark and its crew are sent to find out what happened to the Event Horizon.
Mission to Mars (2000)
In the 2020 a mission to Mars goes horribly wrong and earth receive a transmission from the only survivor of the ship Mars I. A new crew aboard the Mars II is sent on a rescue and reconnaissance mission to Mars.
A remake of the 1972 movie of the same name. Essentially the same story as the '72 movie but updated for modern audiences.
The Icarus II is on a mission to reignite our dying sun after the first mission aboard the Icarus I disappeared before completing its mission. While passing Mercury they receive a distress signal from Icarus I and the crew decide to investigate what happened to their predecessors.
I might be cheating with this one since there is no signal/transmission received. But the cave paintings/star map could be considered another spin on the same idea. The same corporation from the Alien movies sends the science vessel Prometheus to discover the origins of man out in the stars after deciphering cave paintings as a star map and an invitation from their creators.
First Spaceship on Venus (1960)
A recording originating from Venus is found and determined to be evidence of a planned invasion of Earth (this was back when people actually thought Venus had an Earth-like environment and could support life, as opposed to the dry inferno it really is). A crew is assembled to travel to the planet and hopefully negotiate with the aliens there. - contributed by user john-hitchcock
