Midnight Movies After the Heyday

The heyday of the midnight movies phenomena was from 1970 to 1977. For more information see the poll: Midnight Movie Phenomena. From 1977 many leading midnight movie venues switched back to their original programming of live acts and present mainstream movies. The Elgin Theatre in New York City, where the midnight movie movement began, shut down completely in 1978. In succeeding years many independent theaters ceased to exist because of the popularization of the VCR and cable television. During the late 1970s and early 1980s concert films became popular midnight screenings. New films, now from mainstream distributors, were picked up by the midnight movie circuit, but the core of exhibitors that energized the movement had disappeared. In 1988 the Toronto International Film Festival introduced the nightly Midnight Madness section. In the years since, new or recent films still occasionally emerge as midnight movie "hits" on the circuit of theaters that continue to show them.
