For viewers whose tastes run more to Masterpiece Classic than "Real Housewives" (no judgment), "Downton Abbey" is pretty much the ultimate comfort watch. Julian Fellowes' historical drama follows the aristocratic Crawleys from the day after the sinking of the Titanic into the Roaring Twenties, showcasing all the social changes experienced by the family, as well as their extensive staff downstairs. Their high-class problems provide the basis for many of the show's episodes, offering a lens to view the historical period peppered with deliciously aristocratic drama.
"Downton Abbey" ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS, earning 16 Emmy Awards and dozens more nominations. The show was such a success that it earned two feature film sequels -- "Downton Abbey" and the vibrant and emotional "Downton Abbey: A New Era" -- with a third, "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale," slated for release...

On the occasion of the release of the most recent season of Black Mirror, we decided to look back at the show to see what our favorite episodes are. From its origins on British cable to its days as an international phenomenon on Netflix, Black Mirror has had plenty of great episodes that make it challenging to narrow down our ten favorites.
Admittedly, this list might ruffle a few feathers. Some very popular episodes, like season three’s Shut Up and Dance, just missed the cut for us, while others, like The Entire History of You, we think are rather overrated.
So what do we think are the top 10 episodes of Black Mirror?

From its unconventional narratives, which serve as an allegory to real-life issues, and its impeccable cast, the show’s return has now fans excited, especially after Cristin Milioti’s first look in the sequel to season 4’s USS Callister.

At its core, “Playing Nice” deals with a disturbing idea: the scary truth of identities being switched at birth. Despite being sensational, this narrative device reflects viewers’ fears about parenthood and belonging. When Maddie and Pete find out that Theo is not their biological child, they are shocked, and their ideal family is shattered.
This puts them in a maze of moral and emotional problems. With a situation where love is called into question and identity is suddenly malleable, the series skillfully highlights the fragility of familial ties. We see the couple’s confusion as they try to figure out what this new information means, which reflects the larger societal fight with identity in a world that is getting more complicated.
As Miles and Lucy, the other couple caught up in this complicated web of parenthood, are presented to the audience, the plot becomes more complex. Their showing up at...

Things get very tense in the second episode of ITV’s new miniseries. Here’s our Playing Nice episode 2 review.
Episode 1 of Playing Nice ended on the shocking revelation that Miles and Lucy (James McArdle and Jessica Brown Findlay) had filed a lawsuit to try and claim the custody of both Theo and David, the two boys swapped at the hospital as babies. Naturally, this has caused some tension and stress for Pete and Maddie (James Norton and Niamh Algar) as we meet them at the beginning of episode 2.
Pete and Maddie find out the lawsuit was filed eight weeks ago, meaning all the couple’s nice gestures were to manipulate them. In episode 1, Miles and Pete were bonding as a couple of guys, slapping each others’ backs a lot, but that’s all now gone. In fact, Miles is trying to manipulate Theo into thinking Miles is his real daddy.

ITV’s latest mini series dives into the lives of two couples whose babies have been swapped at birth. Here’s our spoiler-free review of Playing Nice episode 1.
It feels like we’ve been spoiled rotten with excellent TV lately. We’ve got Silo, Rivals, Squid Game and a new Doctor Who episode in the last couple months and we’re starting 2025 with a bang too.
Playing Nice is ITV’s latest high profile miniseries. The 4-part show stars James Norton and Niamh Algar as Pete and Madeline, a couple who are informed that their son Theo isn’t biologically theirs. Instead, Theo had been swapped at birth with the baby of another baby. They are Miles and Lucy Lambert (James McArdle and Jessica Brown Findlay) and they insist they want to work out the situation in an amicable way.
If Miles and Lucy had any intention of keeping their promise of keeping things civil,...

Not all anime love interests are dramatic tsunderes or stoic knights in shining armor. Sometimes a male character's unique sense of humor sets him apart to his love interest and to the audience. These characters are creative individuals with eccentric ways of thinking and conducting themselves.
Sometimes, on paper, a character seems like a terrible love interest, but there's something about them and the way they're written that makes them special. Conventional beauty and charm can be nice in a well-written character, but the more eccentric and goofy characters are truly engaging. Quirky love interests go against the grain, they are flawed, and that's what makes them refreshing and endearing.

World War II was one of the most defining wars of the last century. The war involved over 70 countries, including the United States, and reshaped society in the process of its six-year duration. World War II contained an excess of significant moments that have been the subject of documentaries and biopic films for decades.
World War II has always been a fascination for history buffs and people who like to see societal changes on a massive scale. Some WWII films stand out with more impactful stories or through the reinvention of the war drama. Netflix is currently streaming several World War II movies, but a few stand above the rest.

Longtime Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens reflects on why he left the classic British series. First airing on ITV in late 2010, the historical drama, which is set in a fictional Yorkshire country estate, revolves around the aristocratic Crawley family as well as their domestic servants during the post-Edwardian era. Stevens played the role of Mathew Crawley, a leading cast member in the show up until his exit in 2012, and he was joined by other talented acts like Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle and Jessica Brown Findlay.
Now, about 12 years since Stevens exited Downton Abbey, the actor looks back on his departure in a recent interview with Business Insider. The 41-year-old admits that taking the decision to leave the show at the time came with an element of discomfort and uncertainty, but he claims it’s been fun navigating the years after he decided to exit the show.

The best Black Mirror episodes offer up a horror anthology series based more on the fears of technology than on monsters, ghouls, and post-apocalyptic landscapes. While it owes a lot to shows that came before, like The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, this series is about computers, sci-fi advances, and speculative dystopian storylines. At the same time, it also followed The Twilight Zone’s emphasis on taking these fears and using them to shine a light on current social issues.
Black Mirror found ways to take the idea of technology and present cautionary takes of going too far and not taking into consideration that people lose their humanity the further they delve into tech. This series has presented everything from dystopian futures and space exploration to artificial intelligence, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood taking on roles in intelligent and often devastating tales of horror.

ITV’s new mini series Playing Nice, starring James Norton and Niamh Algar, has been scheduled for 5th January. More on it below.
Playing Nice, ITV’s latest big drama series, plays with every parent’s worst nightmare. What if my kid was swapped at the hospital? The four part series stars James Norton and Niamh Algar as parents who find out they left the hospital with the wrong baby years ago. As they meet the parents of their biological son, things start going sideways as they so often do in these things.
Here’s a much more eloquent synopsis: Living a waking nightmare, Pete (James Norton) and Maddie (Niamh Algar) are jettisoned into the world of the other couple; Miles (James McArdle) and Lucy (Jessica Brown Findlay). At first it seems all four are agreed on a solution, but it soon becomes clear that hidden motives are at play.

Mother Mary gets a first-look image, showing Anne Hathaway's role as a glamorous pop star. Directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the upcoming A24 movie chronicles the relationship between a pop star and a fashion designer, with Alba Baptista, Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Michaela Coel set to costar. Mother Mary marks Hathaway's follow-up to Prime Video's The Idea of You, a romantic comedy that was released earlier this year.

The Sybil Downton Abbey death in season 3 was shocking because it was the first on the show. The youngest daughter of Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, and Lady Cora, Sybil's death was one of Downton Abbey's most shocking twists. However, despite what some people theorized at the time, Lady Sybil's exit from the show was planned from the start. Among the Crawley family and the servants of Downton Abbey, Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) was, at the time, the most beloved person in the house.
While Sybil was born a great lady who had wealth and status, she was kind and became interested in progressive politics, and the possibility of improving the lives of others. One of the prime examples of this comes from season 1, where Sybil helps one of the family's maids leave the house to secure a job as a secretary. She falls in love and marries the family chauffeur,...

Downton Abbey's timeline follows the lives of the Crawley family from 1912 to 1928. The series itself spans from 1912 to 1925, and the two movies from 1927 to 1928, which is when Downton Abbey: A New Era is set. In England, these decades were a time of rapid changes in social structures, with the rise of the working class, decline of the aristocracy, and WWI. Over the course of six seasons and two films, Downton Abbey entwines the fictional characters' stories with the true historical events going on around them both in the UK and the wider world.
The Downton Abbey timeline begins with season 1 in 1912, just after the sinking of the Titanic. Across six seasons, Downton and its residents live through World War I, the Spanish Influenza pandemic, structural economic shifts, and rapid social changes. The successful 2019 Downton Abbey movie takes place shortly after the events of the series, in 1927, and Downton Abbey: A New Era...

This article contains spoilers for both versions of The Crow.
The Crow (1994) is one of those seminal touchstones that help define a generation. Gothic, mournful, and haunted by the nigh literal ghost of Brandon Lee, every frame of the film can feel like it’s projected from another world. So it has always been a bit of a mystery why anyone would dare remake the cult classic, including in the mind of the original’s director, Alex Proyas. Yet since about 2008, the redo has experienced starts and stops, and seen interesting directors and castings come and go, from Norman Reedus and Kristen Stewart to Jason Momoa and Jessica Brown Findlay.
Well, The Crow remake is finally here almost 30 years to the day since Lee’s final film was released posthumously on May 13, 1994. And to director Rupert Sanders’ credit, at least insofar as this, his version of The Crow is a...

Good Behavior season 2 marks the end of the series, leaving a cliffhanger about Letty and Javier's dangerous romance. The season ended with Letty killing for the first time, pushing her and Javier over a line they may not recover from. Despite creator Chad Hodge's hope for a finale, no plans for a Good Behavior season 3 have been mentioned in five years.
Good Behavior season 2 was the end of the road for TNT's twisted romantic thriller. Good Behavior follows freshly released criminal Letty, played by Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey). However, while she should focus on gaining custody of her estranged son Jacob, she falls back into bad habits. After overhearing information about a planned murder, she tries - and fails - to stop the assassin Javier (Juan Diego Botto) from taking out his target. Letty and Javier soon form a dangerous romance, which makes up the bulk of the drama on Good Behavior.

Exclusive: In Playing Nice James Norton stars as Pete, a doting dad who finds out his son was switched at birth, giving him a different kind of hero to portray. “He’s a kind of small hero,” Norton told Deadline. “Unlike most of the characters I’ve played, he’s very likable, very amenable and recognizable. There’s a simplicity to him, which I hadn’t really played before, and a likability and quietness that made him feel very real.”
The adaptation of the Jp Delaney novel is produced by Studiocanal and Rabbit Track Pictures, the indie Norton set up with Kitty Kaletsky in 2019. “Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

Downton Abbey sees the intertwining of two very different worlds, the upstairs and the downstairs, and somehow, they live and work harmoniously and effortlessly in one household. No matter their class, those who live in Downton are content, going about their lives in a relatively uncomplicated bubble, but they have no idea it'll burst soon. Their tranquility sinks along with the Titanic; from there, they are thrust into the unknown. They experience many changes even as they try to cling to the world they lost. The Earl and Countess of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) and their three daughters hesitate to see their dynasty into the modern world after being so comfortable in the past, and most of their staff would agree with being content in the bygone era. So, does the upper class throw all of their protocol out the window to modernize and survive, and will the lower class let it?...

As Downton Abbey portrays the lives of those living in the grand house during the early 1900s, the show details scandals of every kind. From Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) eloping with Tom Branson (Allen Leech), who was the family's chauffeur at the time, to Bates's (Brendan Coyle) and Anna's (Joanne Froggatt) wrongful arrests, the characters never catch a break. Yet one of the strangest plot lines takes place in Season 1 when Theo James' Kemal Pamuk comes to stay at Downton. The salacious details of his stay impact the show for seasons to come as it creates a barrier between Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew's (Dan Stevens) relationship and gets tied into Mary's rivalry with Edith (Laura Carmichael). But what sets this scandal apart is that it is based on truth. The series creator, Jullian Fellowes, confirmed the story's reality in his appearance on Downton Abbey: The Official Podcast. Though...

When you think about stories that have a relevant or timeless quality, a Norwegian play from 1883 about poisoned water is probably not the first thing that will come to mind. And yet, director Thomas Ostermeier’s West End debut An Enemy of the People is just that — timelessly relevant. Based on the 19th-century Henrik Ibsen play of the same name, the story follows how a small-town doctor deals with troubling news that threatens the town’s health and well-being as well as the economy. As the play that indirectly inspired the classic Jaws, An Enemy of the People draws you in with a standard first half before kicking the play into high gear with the second half. Unconventional and experimental, Ostermeier is not content with simply letting the audience observe but brings them into his story, inciting passionate discussion and discourse. Starring in the production are Matt Smith, Jessica Brown Findlay,...

When Charlie Brooker's dystopian future series "Black Mirror" first launched in 2011, there were immediate comparisons made to Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone." Not only in the sense that the series is a horror, sci-fi, and alternate-reality anthology show and therefore will be associated with the groundbreaking series regardless of quality but because it was the first show since "The Twilight Zone" to truly capture its sense of bleak, social satire. There is a lot of shared DNA between both shows, but "Black Mirror" has (until the latest season) always been a series attempting to depict a future that feels just a breath away from becoming reality, whereas "The Twilight Zone" tackled just about every time period imaginable. There are some episodes, like "White Bear," that feel like something that could have been written by Serling himself, while others pull obvious inspiration from some of the classic show's most memorable tales.

Just a few minutes into the first episode of season six of "Black Mirror," titled "Joan Is Awful," the titular character - played by Annie Murphy - walks into a bar to meet her ex-boyfriend. Softly in the background, music plays, the singer crooning, "You can blame me, try to shame me." The song isn't really important to the scene, or even the overall episode plot, but eagle-eared fans of the long-running technology-is-terrifying series from Charlie Brooker certainly may recognize it.
The track in question is a 1964 song performed by Irma Thomas, originally written by Jeannie Seely and Randy Newman (of "Toy Story"–tune fame) and called "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)." It is also a favorite of the "Black Mirror" team: "Joan Is Awful" is the sixth episode of the series that the song has appeared in - it pops up once a season.

A The Super Mario Bros. Movie recast has been called for, as fans demand Pedro Pascal replace Chris Pratt in the lead role. Last night, Saturday Night Live aired a sketch inspired by host Pedro Pascal's starring role in the hit HBO series The Last Of Us. At a time when it feels like we’ve seen every romcom premise under the sun, the concept of two total strangers sharing a bed every night might be the first truly original idea I’ve heard in years. No wonder Beth O’Leary’s debut novel The Flatshare has been glued to the hands of train passengers and beach loungers since it was released in 2019. Domhnall Gleeson is Sam, known to the police as the John Doe killer. He starts attending psychotherapy with the recently widowed Dr Alan Strauss (Steve Carell), wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap. But however much Sam might want to talk, his fear of capture holds him up – that is, until Alan wakes up in Sam...
