The movie was fine. But, as a huge admirer of Justice Thurgood Marshall, it upsets me that the movie was called "Marshall". Other than the obligatory Epilogue summarizing future events, this movie does not capture the importance of this man. This movie was as much about Samuel Friedman as it was about Justice Marshall and it could have just as easily have been, and perhaps should have been, called "Friedman." The movie portrays Friedman, at least early on, as somewhat of a simple minded and nervous lawyer who was reluctant and afraid to take on this complicated matter. By all accounts, nothing could be further from the truth. Thankfully, Friedman does get much credit for the work he did in People of Connecticut vs. Spell, but in doing so for some reason the film makers felt the need to belittle him during parts of the film, something he does not deserve.

The movie is almost entirely about a single criminal case (albeit an important one on many levels) in which Marshall was involved. While the movie is very well done and worth watching, if you think you will be learning about Justice Marshall's life and career in any significant way, I think you will be disappointed. Called something else, I would give this film 8 stars.
