• Warning: Spoilers
I watched this having seen the previous animated film and other multiverse stories from DC. This is a pretty terrible effort. I don't know why the bat family were fighting eachother; their conflict is over ideology differences that are unclear. Seeing Batman beyond and hearing the original voice gave me joy but it was shallow since he said maybe 3 or 4 short lines. Batman in this film is wasted, he is unlike any previous Batman in a bad way. Perhaps it is the voice directing of the whole film or the writing but nothing that happens has the weight that it deserves with what is happening in the universes. I found very little reason to care about Supergirl because she doesn't get to do anything other than complain. She is an awesome character that could have carried this story but it felt like she had handcuffs on. I kept expecting the monitor to be revealed as vandal Savage because he looks soo much like other iterations of the character. I miss the previous continuity of films, they weren't all good but the voice acting was amazing every time, and the characters were written with depth and conflicts felt like they had important implications on the world. This was also accomplished movie by movie, you never HAD to watch the previous one. I just did not care. Superman was also very lackluster, he looked young, and lacking in confidence. I was also really put off and my eyes rolled hard when the woman fighting John Stewart just blasted him with her unearned egotistical superiority attitude, this attitude continued with Wonder Woman pleading to the other Amazon to arm the men, it felt intentionally sexist in a time where male hating has become popular in the film industry. It felt like the writers were implanting their own feelings into these characters. It happens a lot and it immediately detracts from the story and cheapens the quality of the film. The last point I want to make is I hope they drop this art style; the backgrounds looks great, however the characters are all highlighted with a black outline and it separates them from the background in a really awkward way. I also noticed there is a lacking of facial expressions from every character, the animation on characters looks lazy and stiff. I finished the film not looking forward to part 3. I certainly won't be spending 5.99 to rent it. I'll wait until it releases on Max.
