One of the reasons that Batman is so different than all the other heroes is that he's a realist. He has no special powers, and his city (outside of the justice league stories) is a normal city with normal people. His stories are relatable, because, albeit a small chance, the story arcs could truly happen in real life. That's what makes the Nolanverse so different. It's also why BTAS was so highly praised. This series tries to be realistic in the beginning, and then completely loses its focus by episode 5. We went from Batman tracking mobsters and serial killers to doing rituals with his butler.
Another issue with this series that I cannot ignore is its historical inaccuracy. I am all for added diversity, and Gotham is one of the largest cities in the DC Universe, so of course there should be representation of multiple races and cultures. However, if the series is set in the 1940s, we cannot pretend that the characters in this show would be in the positions they would be in. To have an African American police commissioner at the time would be unheard of. The first elected African American sheriff was appointed in 1966. It's hard for me to watch this show and not think about the Jim Crow laws that would be in affect in Gotham City. Barb Gordon being a lawyer while both African American and female is implausible for American culture at the time. Dr. Quinzel and Montoya being openly lesbian would be taboo at the time as well, and the show does not even address this. If you want to add this, that's fine, but then have the characters face social challenges, and not pretend like this was a social norm.
Bruce/Batmans character is extremely flat. He's not inspiring, and we don't really get the full Batman experience from him. He's not that intimidating like he is in other series. He's just...there. He does not have good dialogue as Batman, and is pretty insensitive and unfeeling in certain situations.
Overall this series is meh. Just that. It has some good moments, it has its bad moments. It was dealt a bad hand when you have three well known directors collaborating with it. I expected a lot more from them. I'll just go back to watching BTAS.
