- After his school days, Hugo Junkers studied in Charlottenburg, Karlsruhe and Aachen at the technical universities there. In 1883 he passed his examination to become a construction manager. He then worked as a designer for various companies. In 1888 he moved to the Continental company in Dessau. Together with Wilhelm Oechelhäuser, he founded the "experimental station for gas engines". In 1892, the development of the first two-stroke opposed-piston gas engine was completed and production began. In the same year he patented his invention of the calorimeter, a device for determining gas heating values. In 1894 he invented the first gas bath heater. Hugo Junkers founded his own company called "Junkers & Co" in Dessau in 1895, where he manufactured gas appliances. From 1897 to 1912 he was professor of thermal engineering and thermodynamics at the Aachen University of Technology. In 1898 he married Therese Bennhold from Dessau. A total of twelve children were born from this union. In 1902 he founded a research laboratory in Aachen where he worked on oil engines. Junkers further developed the heavy oil aircraft engine to operational readiness.
From 1909 he concentrated on building aircraft. The following year he patented a new type of wing that he had developed. The special feature of the cantilevered large wing is the use of its interior space. In 1913 he founded the company "Junkers Motorenbau GmbH". In 1915, Hugo Junkers succeeded in building the first all-metal aircraft under the name J 1. According to the wishes of the Supreme Army Command "OHL", the Junkers works worked with the Dutch fighter designer and aviator Anthony H. G. Fokker to build an all-metal military aircraft. After the First World War, Hugo Junkers founded "Junkers-Flugzeugwerke AG" in Dessau. After the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was banned from building aircraft and aircraft engines for a period of six months. Junkers wanted to get around this by outsourcing its production to Russia and Sweden. In the same year the F 13, an all-metal aircraft, was built. It is significant for having got German commercial aviation going. In the next few years, Hugo Junkers produced numerous aircraft models under the names W 33, G 24, G 31 or G 38.
The W33 made the first east-west crossing of the Atlantic in 1928. From that year onwards, the legendary Ju 52, also affectionately known as the Aunt Ju, was manufactured. By the 1940s, the machine had become the most frequently built aircraft in the world. In 1921, Hugo Junkers founded the "Air Transport Department of the Junkerswerke" to regulate domestic air traffic. In 1926, "Junkers Luftverkehr AG" was merged into "Deutsche Lufthansa". In 1923, the aircraft manufacturer founded the company "Junkers Motorenbau GmbH" in Dessau. In the same year, aircraft manufacturing operations were opened in Fili near Moscow. Economic connections to the Bauhaus in Dessau developed and with them a friendly relationship with the Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius. In 1933, the year the National Socialists came to power, Junkers had to hand over his patents and his shares in his companies to the Third Reich under pressure from the Nazi regime. He then withdrew into private life and devoted himself to research into the construction of high-rise buildings made of metal. During the Second World War, the Junkers factory developed into the largest forge of military aircraft. Among other things, the legendary Ju 88 dive bomber (Stuka) was built here.

Sam Harris was an extremely prolific and successful Broadway theatrical producer (active from 1904 until his death in 1941) and theater owner, first in partnership with the legendary George M. Cohan. He bitterly broke with Cohan over the issue of signing the Actors Equity contract (there are several seemingly deliberate gross factual inaccuracies in the characterization of him in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), portrayed by Richard Whorf--not in the least that he'd died the year before!). He produced numerous historically important productions with The Marx Brothers in conjunction with George S. Kaufman, Moss Hart and Morrie Ryskind in their original Broadway productions. Not to be confused with his notorious contemporary Jed Harris.- Maude Tull was born on 3 February 1872 in Bedford, Iowa, USA. She died on 10 July 1976 in Inglewood, California, USA.

Gertrude Stein was the fifth child in the Daniel and Amelia Stein family. She grew up in a trilingual environment, spending her childhood in Vienna and Paris, then living in California. She graduated from Radcliffe College and went to the Medical School at Johns Hopkins University for 2 years. She continued her medical studies in Europe, but traveling and writing eventually took over. Her first novel "Q.E.D." was written in New York, but was published only after her death under the title "Things As They Are".
Gertrude Stein lived in Paris for 40 years, becoming a patron of artists Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne, and others. She amassed an enormous collection of art, that is now displayed in major museums. Her 1906 portrait by Pablo Picasso was finished after more than 50 sittings. She experimented with stream-of-consciousness in her own deconstructive style, and by using words as rhythmical brush-strokes. She was called a "literary cubist", being compared to the cubist artists for her ability of projecting reality beyond reality. Her literary secretary, Alice B. Toklas, was a lifetime companion. They traveled in Spain together, while Stein worked on the book "Tender Buttons" (1914). During WWI Stein was driving her Ford and helping the wounded soldiers. She and Alice were both honored for this work.
After WWI Gertrude Stein became the center of the American expatriate community in Paris. She was the catalyst in the development of modern artists and writers. Her home was the meeting place for such artists and writers, as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, Thornton Wilder and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ernest Hemingway confessed on meeting Stein..."It was a vital day for me when I stumbled upon you." She was credited for dubbing them as "The Lost Generation".
"The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" (1933) became a best seller and turned Stein into a celebrity. Her lecture tour of the United States was a great success, and she was praised by Thornton Wilder, Sherwood Anderson, and Charles Chaplin. Back in Paris she went through changes of moving to a new apartment, and soon moving out of Paris before the Nazi occupation in WWII. Gertrude Stein and Alice, being both Jewish, barely escaped a concentration camp, protected by their French neighbors. They returned to Paris in 1944 and found the precious art collection untouched.
Her health declined and she was diagnosed with colon cancer. When rushed into emergency surgery her last words to Alice were: "What is the answer?" ...without a reply, "In that case...what is the question?"- Stephen Pell was born on 3 February 1874 in New York, USA. After graduating college he took a job with the "Municipal Journal and Engineer" newspaper in New York and began to write stories on the side. His first story was published in "Metropolitan" magazine, and then "Outing" magazine began publishing a string of his "Bar 20" short stories, with the iconic Hopalong Cassidy character. He has said that his first Western books ere written using data about the American West, but that his later books were written using information he gathered from his extensive traveling throughout the American West. He kept a card file of data about the West that contained more than 17,000 cards, covering everything from fur trapping and cattle drives to the Pony Express and the freight-wagon industry.
For many years Mulford was very unhappy with the way his character of Hopalong Cassidy was portrayed in the films made from his books. In the novels Cassidy is a grubby, irritable, foul-mouthed, crusty old coot; in the films he was turned into a clean-cut, articulate, courtly, distinguished-looking gentleman, as played by William Boyd. Eventually he came to terms with the disparity, and even finally decided to meet with Boyd, which he had steadfastly refused to do, and the two actually hit it off.
Mulford died in Portland, Maine, on May 10, 1956. He had suffered smoke damage to his lungs in a fire in 1947, died from complications after surgery to repair that damage. - Millan Fjellström was born on 3 February 1883 in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, Sweden.
