- Popular novelist and biographer Hobart Chatfield Chatfield-Taylor was born on March 24, 1865 in Chicago, the son of Henry Hobart (1835-1875) and Adelaide Chatfield Taylor (1834-1888). His father was a wealthy Chicago area businessman who was involved in the manufacturing of agricultural implements. Henry Taylor would go on to be one of the original directors of the Elgin Watch Company and the Commercial National Bank of Chicago.
Hobart graduated from Cornell University in 1886 where he majored in science and literature. While attending Cornell he managed the varsity baseball team for several seasons.
When his uncle Wayne Chatfield (1840-1892) died, he left Hobart 2.5 million dollars with the stipulation the he add Chatfield to his surname. Hobart who was born with the middle name Chatfield then became known as Hobart Chatfield Chatfield-Taylor.
After graduation he founded a weekly literary magazine called America. While considered by some to be a literary success, the magazine eventually proved to be a financial failure. While in Europe as a special correspondent for Chicago Daily News and not long after he had sold his interests in the magazine, Hobart wrote his first novel "With Edge Tools" (1891) followed by "An American Peeress" (1894). The success of the latter helped cement his career as a writer with the critics and the public.
Hobart over his career, would author biographies, comedies historical fiction and books of non-fiction. Examples of some of his more popular works might include:
"Two Women & a Fool" (1896) "The Vice of Fools" (1897) "The Secretary of the Legation" (1899) "The Idle Born" (1900) with Reginald De Koven "The Crimson Wing" (1902) "The Middle West Discovers Outdoors" (1905) "Moliere: a biography" (1906) "The Land of the Castanet, Spanish Sketches" (1906)" "Fame's Pathway: A Romance of a Genius" (1909) "Goldoni: a biography" (1913). "Chicago" (1917) "Odyssey of a Modern Ulysses; Cities of Many Men" (1926) "Charmed Circles" (1935)
Hobart wrote two books that brought him international acclaim. The French government awarded him the Legion of Honor for his biography of the French playwright Moliere (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin ) and Italian government of King Victor Emmanuel III presented him with the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus and the Order of the Crown of Italy for his biography of the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni). During his life he had also received honors from the governments of England, Portugal, Venezuela and Spain.
In 1890, Hobart married Rose Farwell (1870-1918), on the day following her graduation from finishing school. She was the daughter of Charles B. Farwell (1823-1903), a former congressman and senator from Illinois and the sister-in-law of composer Reginald De Koven.
Hobart and his wife were both avid golfers. He is thought to have built the first golf course west of New York on property his father-in-law owned in Lake Forest, Illinois.

He is probably best remembered by some for his four year marriage to former debutante and distant cousin, Brenda Frazier (1921-1982). After their marriage failed, Brenda said of him that he was a gentleman in every sense of the word.
Hobart married Estelle Barbour Stillman (1878-1960) in 1920; two years after Rose had passed away. Estelle was the daughter of a wealthy Detroit banker and the widow of New York banker, George Schley Stillman, who died of meningitis in 1907 after contracting typhoid fever.
Author Finley Peter Dunne' (father of Finley Peter Dunne) once headed a committee that wrote Hobart asking him if he would mind if they submitted his name as a candidate for the office of mayor of Chicago. Dunne suggested to the committee that if Hobart declined, maybe he would let them submit just part of his name.
Throughout most of his life, Hobart was known as a patron of fine art and had moved freely among society's high circles. In September of 1937 he announced he was withdrawing from public life. A near fatal heart attack suffered earlier that year while attending the coronation of King Edward VI had greatly sapped his strength.

The great American escape artist and magician Houdini (immortalized by a memorable performance by Tony Curtis in the eponymous 1953 film) was born Erich Weiss on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary, though he often gave his birthplace as Appleton, Wisconsin, where he was raised. One of five brothers and one daughter born to rabbi Samuel Weiss and his wife Cecilia, the future Houdini was four years old when his parents emigrated to the U.S., where Weiss, as "Harry Houdini", became one of the major celebrities of the first age dominated by the mass media.
His boyhood was spent in poverty and, when he was 17, he conjured up a magic act with his friend Jack Hayman, in order to escape the poverty and anonymity of manual labor which would likely have been his lot in life. Young Erich had been fascinated with magic since he was a young lad, when he was in the audience of a magic show put on by a traveling magician named Dr. Lynch. Billing themselves as the "Houdini Bros." in tribute to French magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, Erich Weiss became an entertainer, though it took him some seven years to catch on.
Weiss and Hayman specialized in the Crate Escape (eventually known as Metamorphosis or The Substitution Trunk), and Houdini's brother Theodore replaced Hayman when he became uninterested in the act. Eventually, Theodore -- billed as Hardeen -- was replaced by Wilhemina Rahner (known as Bess), the woman "Harry Houdini" would eventually marry. The marriage on June 22, 1894 caused a conflict with his Jewish family as Bess was a Roman Catholic. They married in secret, then again at a synagogue and in a Catholic church to please both of their families.
While developing his act, Houdini was not above the old carny trick of posing as a spirit medium, making the rounds of the town clerk's office and nearby cemeteries in order to provide "messages from beyond". In 1896, while visiting a doctor friend in Nova Scotia, he saw his first strait jacket, which gave him the idea of developing an act in which he would escape from it.
Houdini finally hit the big-time when he was 24 years old with his Challenge Act in 1898, while he was making the rounds of vaudeville. Houdini's Challenge Act consisted of him escaping from a pair of handcuffs produced by an audience member. Eventually, this evolved into escapes from strait jackets, boxes, crates, safes, and other instruments and devices (such as his Water Torture Cell), as well as from jail cells. Houdini was also adept at escaping from being "buried alive". Hand-cuffed and strait-jacketed, he could escape while being hung upside down from a crane, or while lowered from a bridge, or even make his escape from padlocked crates lowered into a river.
Houdini also became famous as a debunker of mediums and "experts" of the paranormal, but this was done in hope he could find an actual medium that could communicate with the dead so that he could communicate with his beloved mother Cecilia after she passed away. He became quite famous in the ragtime age of the first quarter of the last century, even appearing in motion pictures produced by his own company.
Harry Houdini, the greatest magician ever produced by America, died in Detroit, Michigan during a national tour. The cause of death officially was peritonitis from a ruptured appendix. His death came nine days after having been punched in the stomach during the Canadian leg of the tour by J. Gordon Whitehead, a McGill University student who was testing Houdini's famed ability to take body blows. Always the trouper, Houdini had soldiered on despite stomach pains. (Early during the tour, he had broken an ankle but did not let it stop him or the tour.) His wife Bess, to whom Houdini left his half-million dollar estate, collected a double indemnity on his life insurance policy, as the blow was considered to have shortened the great magician's life and contributed to his premature death at the age of 52.
The date of his death was October 31, 1926 -- Halloween, one of three days (October 31-November 2) of Samhain, the Celtic New Year, when the veil between the living and the dead allegedly is at its thinnest and the living can make contact with the dead. Annually on Halloween from 1927 to 1937, Bess held a séance to try to contact her departed husband. She did not succeed, though she helped keep the memory of her husband alive in the American consciousness. Even today, magicians worldwide conduct séances on Halloween in an effort to contact the late escapologist.- Luigi Einaudi was born on 24 March 1874 in Carrù, Piedmont, Italy. Luigi was a writer, known for Luigi Einaudi. Diario dell'esilio svizzero (2000). Luigi was married to Ida Pellegrini di Pescantina. Luigi died on 30 October 1961 in Rome, Lazio, Italy.

- Tall, statuesque Parisian actress, trained at the Sorbonne. Brunette Charlotte Mineau, known locally as "Lottie", was the daughter of a police officer who tragically drowned when she was all of two months old. As a youngster, she displayed a free spirit and moved around a lot, finding employment variously as a stenographer, a department store clerk and a telephone operator before discovering her muse in show business. Charlotte was already a seasoned performer with Essanay by the time Charles Chaplin arrived from England. In her very first screen appearance in The Usual Way (1913) she co-starred with Wallace Beery. She later appeared in several of Chaplin's films, including an uncredited bit in his debut His New Job (1915). Charlotte subsequently joined Chaplin's move to Mutual, then had spells with Mack Sennett and Hal Roach where she supported Laurel & Hardy on several occasions (notably in Sugar Daddies (1927).
Not merely decorative, Charlotte provided poise and glamour to many a slapstick farce during her sojourn in silent pictures. At the height of her popularity, her salary amounted to a respectable $350 a week. More than once, she was woefully misused by producers who found her difficult to cast due to her unusual height. Cast in villainous or matronly supporting roles she would at times resort to adopting a severe or careworn look to avoid being rejected as "too attractive". Lottie's career wound down with the advent of sound and she was last glimpsed as 'Emily', a party guest, in The Marx Brothers feature Monkey Business (1931). - Edward Weston was born on 24 March 1886 in Highland Park, Illinois, USA.
