Charles Emmett van Loan was born on 29 June 1876, at San Jose, California, the son of Richard and Emma Van Loan. His father was a captain in the Salvation Army and his mother an adjutant (a rank that has since been discontinued). As young boy in San Bernardino, Charles was often called upon to beat the drum at Salvation Army functions.
Charles began as a writer for the Los Angeles Morning Herald and later the Los Angeles Examiner. In New York he worked as a sports writer on the Evening Journal and the American, before becoming associate editor for the Saturday Evening Post. When Charles left the New York American he was able to bring in his friend, Damon Runyon, to replace him as sports writer.
During his career Charles, whose passion was baseball, became known as one of America's most popular sports writers, humorist and writer of short stories. He was a prolific contributor of sports stories for leading magazines, in particular the Saturday Evening Post. According to the Philadelphia Public Ledger, Charles had the largest following of men readers of any magazine fiction writer. The Bonehead" (1911), "The Ten-Thousand Dollar Arm and Other Tales of the Big League" (1912), and "Art and the Dollar" (1919) were among his most popular stories.
Charles Emmett van Loan died of chronic nephritis on 2 March 1919, while on business trip to Abington, Pennsylvania. It was thought at the time that a broken arm suffered in an automobile accident in 1914 may have contributed to his early death. He was survived by his wife, the former Emma C. Lenz (1880-1954), a daughter Virginia and his son Richard. Charles' father collapsed and died of a heart attack upon hearing of his son's passing.- Writer

Breil died from heart disease.- Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1858, George Washington Goethals graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1880. Commissioned as a lieutenant, ,he was assigned to the army's Corps of Engineers, and gained experience in the planning and building of canals and harbors, which came in handy when he returned to West Point as an instructor.
In 1907 US President Theodore Roosevelt picked him to serve as chairman and chief engineer of the US Canal Commission, the agency tasked with constructing the Panama Canal. Goethals took over complete control of the project in January of 1908. It was, to say the least, a daunting task; his two predecessors had resigned under the stress of the enormous project. He not only had to overcome the technical problems involved in the construction of the canal itself, but he had to feed and house more than 3,000 workers. In addition, the workforce had been ravaged by such tropical diseases as malaria and yellow fever, although they were eventually brought under control.
The Canal was finally opened in 1914, and US President Woodrow Wilson appointed Goethals as the first Governor of the Canal Zone, a position he held until 1917, when the US entered World War I. He was appointed acting Quartermatser General of the Army . He left the army in 1919 and started his own engineering firm, George Goethals and Co., of which he was president until 1928.
He died in New York city on Jan. 21, 1928. - Theatrical producer Harry Frazee has gone down in history as the man who sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees while he was owner of Boston Red Sox. Often called F. S. Armitage, Frederick S. Armitage was an early motion picture cinematographer/director who began his career with short subjects for American Mutoscope & Biograph at a time when the film company was still using hand-cranked machines to display their work. Armitage was important for his work with time-lapse photography, as can be observed in his "Building Up and Demolishing the Star Theater" which uses this technique to show the Star Theater being built up and then destroyed.
Armitage, born in Seneca Falls, in New York, has little information known about his personal life. His oldest credits date in 1898. In 1899 he directed 188 actualities, sometimes subjects having to do with the Spanish-American War. Armitage was also one of three Biograph cameramen to film Tom Sharkey and Jim Jeffries' s championship bout.
From 1900 Armitage began making a number of films that mainly used special trick effects such as the aforementioned Time-lapse experiments, such as his "A Terrible Night" and "The Prince of Darkness" which both use reversing the film as a main effect. To create "Nymph of the Waves" Armitage combined prints to show a woman dressed as a nymph dancing on the falls. Armitage finished his career as a cinematographer at American Mutoscope & Biograph with Wallace McCutcheon's "The Nihilists" and "Wanted: A Dog" both from 1905. Armitage later returned to American Mutoscope & Biograph in 1907, but stayed with the Edison Manufacturing Company until 1910. His last known works are from 1916-1917. Afterwords he vanished from the cinematographic record completely.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born into a family of old provincial nobility. Failing his final exams at a preparatory school, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts to study architecture. In 1921, he began military service in the 2nd Regiment of Chasseurs, and sent to Strasbourg for pilot training. The next year, he obtained his license, and was offered a transfer to the air force. But his fiancée's family objected, so he settled in Paris and took an office job. His engagement ultimately broke off, and he worked at several jobs over the next few years without success.
By 1926, he was flying again. He became one of the pioneers of international postal flight in the days when aircrafts had few instruments and pilots flew by the seat of their pants. He worked on the Aéropostale between Toulouse and Dakar. His first tale, L'Aviateur (The Aviator), was published in the magazine Le Navire d'Argent. In 1928, he published his first book, Courrier-Sud (Southern Mail), and flew the Casablanca/Dakar route. He became the director of Cap Juby airfield in Rio de Oro, Sahara. In 1929, he moved to South America where he was appointed director of the Aeroposta Argentina Company. In 1931, Vol de Nuit (Night Flight), which won the Prix Femina, was published. He married Salvadoran artist and writer Consuelo Suncin Sandoval de Gómez, who became the model for the temperamental Rose in Le Petit Prince. Theirs was a stormy union as Saint-Exupéry traveled frequently and indulged in numerous affairs.
During World War II, he was in New York City, but returned to France to join a squadron based in the Mediterranean. Now 44, he agreed to collect data on German troop movements in the Rhone River Valley. He took off the night of July 31, 1944, and was never seen again. A lady reported having seen a plane crash around noon on August 1st near the Bay of Carqueiranne. A body wearing a French uniform was found several days later, and buried. In 1998, a fisherman found a silver chain bracelet south of Marseille which was identified as being Saint-Exupéry's. On April 7, 2004, officials confirmed that the wreckage of a Lockheed Lightning P-38 found on the seabed off the coast of Marseille in 2000 was Saint-Exupéry's.
Further research in 2006 by the dive team which recovered the wreckage located a German pilot who was flying a mission at the Bay of Carqueiranne at the time Saint-Exupéry's plane went down. Horst Rippert acknowledged that he shot at the plane, but did not report it, possibly because he was not sure he actually downed it. When the Germans heard American radio broadcasts that Saint-Exupéry was missing, Rippert said he knew that the plane he downed was his. Rippert idolized Saint-Exupéry, read all his books, and had been bothered by the incident his whole life. He told the dive team he would not have shot at the plane had he known it was Saint-Exupéry's.- Robert Frazer was born on 29 June 1891 in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA.
