Elizabeth Stamatina Fey was born in 1970 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, just west of Philadelphia, to Xenobia "Jeanne" (Xenakes), a brokerage employee, and Donald Henry Fey, who wrote grant proposals for universities. Her mother is Greek, born in Piraeus, while her father had German, Northern Irish, and English ancestry. Going by the name of Tina, Fey considered herself a "supernerd" during her high school and college years. She studied drama at the University of Virginia, and after graduating in 1992, she headed to Chicago, the ancestral home of American comedy. While working at a YMCA to support herself, she started Second City's first set of courses. After about nine months, a teacher told her to just skip ahead and audition for the more selective Second City Training Center. She failed but about eight weeks later, she re-auditioned and got into the year-long program. She ended up spending many years at The Second City in Chicago where many SNL cast members first started out. Then in 1995, Saturday Night Live (1975) came to The Second City's cast, including Fey's friend, Adam McKay, as a writer, searching for new talent. What they found was Tina Fey. When Adam was made Head writer, he suggested Fey should send a submission packet over the summer with six sketches, 10 pages each. Tina took the advice and sent them. After Lorne Michaels met her and saw her work she was offered a job a week later. She admitted that she was extremely nervous working in the legendary Studio 8H; being a foot shorter than everyone else, younger, and being one of the only female writers at the time. After a few years, Tina made history by becoming the first female head writer in the show's history. Tina also made her screen debut as a featured player during the 25th season by co-anchoring Weekend Update with Jimmy Fallon. Since Tina and Jimmy have taken over Weekend Update it has been considered the best ever. This year she made it to full fledged star by becoming a regular cast member, though she is hardly on the show, besides Update. And during the past two summers, Tina and Rachel Dratch performed their two-woman show to critical acclaim in both Chicago (1999) and New York (2000) and made their Aspen Comedy Festival Debut. Tina is married to Jeff Richmond, a Second City director and lives in New York City.

Frey previously served as producer of Aliens: Expanded (2024), In Search of Tomorrow (2022), Dumbo (2019), Executive Producer of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) and Big Eyes (2014), Producer of the Here With Me (2013) music video for The Killers and Co-Producer of Frankenweenie (2012).

Derek also served as Associate Producer of Dark Shadows (2012), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Corpse Bride (2005), and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (2005). Films Frey has worked in a producer capacity have earned over $2.9 billion at the box office.

Frey progressed within multiple positions for Tim Burton Productions, joining the company in 1996, and swiftly advanced to the head of the organization. Frey also oversaw an in-house graphic design, photography and writing team for the creation of high quality consumer products, merchandise and publications related to Burton's projects and artistry. In 2009 Frey worked closely with curators from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for the formation of the popular The World of Tim Burton exhibition which has made record-breaking stops around the globe.

Frey wrote the Frankenweenie-based short film Captain Sparky vs. the Flying Saucers (2013). He also edited the award-winning publication The Art of Tim Burton (2009) and produced the documentary A Conversion with Danny Elfman and Tim Burton (2011). Derek served as Production Coordinator of the animated series The World of Stainboy (2000) as well as the music video Bones (2006) for The Killers. Early in his career, he assisted Burton on Mars Attacks! (1996), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Planet of the Apes (2001), and Big Fish (2003).

Derek has also directed numerous indie featurettes, shorts, series, documentaries, and music videos that have achieved success on the film festival circuit. Some of his notable works include Viaticum (2024), The Book Club for Men (2023), Awkward Endeavors (2022), Pangea (2018), and God Came 'Round (2017). His dark comedy, Kill The Engine (2017), won 45 awards, including Best Comedy and Best Director at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards. His horror featurette Green Lake (2016) won 50 awards, including Best Short at the Honolulu Film Fest and Best Short, Director, and Cinematography at the NYC Indie Film Awards.

Derek's other acclaimed projects include Motel Providence (2014), Sky Blue Collar (2013), and The Ballad of Sandeep (2012), as well as music videos and documentaries featuring music by Professor T & the East Side Shredders, The Killers, Technical Difficulties, Delight Talkies, Trever Veilleux, Witching Hour, and The Mars Patrol.

Struck by a tragic family even early on and seeing how secretive adults can be when children aren't around, Dave found solace in books, movies and television before he was able to tie his shoes. Using his Muppets as the cast and a janky video camera, he made his first short film at age 8 and things were never the same after that. In 1996, he was given his first 35mm camera and the two have been inseparable. During high school, he was very quiet and couldn't connect with many people. He spent his weekends watching old movies and found comfort in books when everyone else was drag racing in front of Wendy's. After high school ended, he attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a focus on writing .After 2 years there and gaining personal experiences though the people he met and the places her worked (ever been to the deli counter in a south philly supermarket? I got stories for days.) Dave grew weary of the city and wanted to see the college life he saw in the movies, so he went to Hofstra University in Long Island. After a year of that, he had some more characters to write about and he returned to Philadelphia to Temple University. Completing his education there with a senior thesis film under his belt he wanted to stick around Philly for a bit and see what other projects he could work on. Bouncing back and forth between Philly and Brooklyn for a few years working on indie films and small theatre shows while working day jobs at café's and restaurants, he made his way to Los Angeles. Working at film festivals, cafes and talking shop with anyone he could, he was ready to start working. After some deep soul searching and the Covid virus shutting down the city, he returned to Brooklyn with dozens of scripts ready to be read. Dave is an ambitious little thing who wants to work with creative people to make something that will out live them.
