Boston's assertive detective Jane Rizzoli and steady medical examiner Maura Isles are hailing from very different economic backgrounds, but the strong, competent women effectively work together to solve the city's most puzzling crimes.

Jane and Maura investigate the murder of a young woman who was found beaten, raped and strangled outside a gay bar. At the scene they find a flyer from an anti-gay organization and their first thought is that they are dealing with a hate crime. The victim was married and her same-sex spouse says everything was fine between them, though the fact that she was out at a bar alone suggests she may have been cheating. The victim had a resemblance to Jane who goes undercover at the bar, with Maura working there as a waitress to collect fingerprint samples from anyone Jane might meet. Meanwhile, Jane goes with someone from her yoga class - Maura encourages her he doesn't quite meet expectations.

A college student is shot dead on campus. Meanwhile, Jane's mother Angela gets into a spat with her father over her car.

Jane and Maura come across a murder victim while running a marathon. The closed roads, and thousands of spectators mean that there is no way to get backup to Jane, or for Maura to get the body to the morgue.

Rizzoli and Dr Isles look at the death of the eldest son of a prominent Boston family. Maura allows her personal connection to the family to cloud her judgment, causing a rift between her and Jane when the family expects special treatment.

Still suffering from nightmares of Hoyt, Jane finds a "gift" left outside her home. While she deals with that, the team investigate a missing person found murdered and posed on a park bench.

Rizzoli works a strangulation murder after a body is dumped at the PD softball game.

A serial killer named the Surgeon once tried to kill Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli. Still serving time, his 'signature' killings recur. Rizzoli, together with Medical Examiner Dr. Isles, pursue them, while the Surgeon escapes from prison.

The death of a young boy may be connected to a voodoo ceremony.

A young man is found murdered, stabbed to death with an ice pick, which was left sticking out of his ear. An MO that reminds Korsak of old school mob hits.

An under-cover cop is killed by a drug ring. They then attack police HQ to retrieve a crucial piece of evidence found by Rizzoli at the crime scene. Rizzoli, Dr. Isles and others are trapped inside the HQ. A shoot-out ultimately ensues.

A pregnant woman is stabbed to death but Dr. Isles saves her baby. The husband is suspected. Police find that the baby is surrogate and has also been sold online in adoption. During kangaroo volunteering, a suspicious nurse is observed .

Rizzoli gets a bravery medal after escaping from a hostage situation. A brave US military private is also felicitated but is killed by a car bomb after the ceremony. Rizzoli, resting for the last three months and yet unfit, investigates.

From among thousands of sailors in Boston during Fleet Week, an unknown sailor is suspected of two rapes and murders. Admiral Frost appears and he and his son Detective Frost do not see eye to eye. Policeman Rizzoli Jr. plays a part.

22 year old Melissa finds her dock-working father's work place injury fishy. Her subsequent murder has the mob's M.O. But, an injured Doyle, the mobster and Isles' father, claims innocence. Rizzoli frowns on Isles' chess game with Tom.
