The British Residence is overrun and Ash is the only survivor. Now free from any obligations to his former Regiment, he must return to Bhitor when he hears that the Rana is seriously ill and that his wives will need to commit suttee and join him on his funeral pyre should he die. His only concern now is to save Anjuli.

Ash is eventually assigned to escort two sisters, one of whom is to be married to a maharajah in a nearby prince state. To his great delight, he is reunited with Koda Dad, the man who was a surrogate father in his youth and the now quite beautiful Anjuli, who adored him as a child and is one of the princesses he is escorting.
