- Three little children live in an orphanage which is next to the school where little Lauretta is a pupil. The three befriend her and one night they climb the wall separating the orphanage from the school because they want to see fireworks. One of the boys is however wounded by a firecracker and at his sickbed his nanny and Lauretta's father meet. The two both with unfortunate love stories behind them, learn to love each other.
- Shy tenor Marcello is afraid to sing in public. Two of his friends think of having an elegant youth on the stage pretending to sing while Marcello sings behind the curtain. The scam is successful, but after a while Marcello summons the courage to go on stage himself.

- In 19th-century France, middle-aged orphans Gasparre and Battista, watchmen at an orphanage, find out from a soothsayer that one of them is the offspring of the Hangman of Paris and the other is the son of a count. But it is only a dream of theirs.
- An honest clerk gets into business with a smuggler and commits an embezzlement to pay for his daughter's (Madunnella) wedding. The smuggler has, however, set his eyes on the girl and blackmails her father about the embezzled money. Madunnella succeeds in getting her father's money back even although she has to withstand a sexual assault. Furious with rage the clerk kills the smuggler and is sent to jail. He will be out, however, in time for his daughter wedding with her legitimate boy-friend.

- During a rainy night a woman puts a little bundle before a convent. It's a baby girl to whom the nuns give the the name Maria. When Maria grows up she marries Salvatore. Soon a new character is introduced in the story, Salvatore's sister, a no gooder, lover of a loan shark who has got her pregnant. Maria tries to convince him to marry her but she only gains Salvatore's distrust who believes her to be the old man's lover. The two now live apart and Maria is pregnant with Salvatore's child. When she delivers the baby she brings him to the convent like her mother did with her and while she prays the Madonna to forgive her her imaginary sin she's joined by her husband who has finally understood she has always loved him.
- Beautiful gold-digger Sonia mistakes Antonio, a waiter in a Neapolitan hotel, for Arab Prince Bey of Agapur and makes an appointment with him for the following day in Capri, and Antonio goes there behind the backs of his wife and mother-in-law. A lucky series of circumstances actually does transform him into the prince of the island.
- Mobster Pepé Le Mokò dies during a shootout with the police. His gang decide that his successor will be a relative of his from Naples: Antonio Lumaconi (Totò Le Mokò), a street musician.

Francisco has to go back to Brasil but promises Lucia he will come back and marry her. - Two chorus girls leave Milan to get to the famous Totò's theatre company. Unfortunately the bus they are on breaks down and they ask for a lift, but the driver gets too fresh with them and they decide to continue the journey with any means of transport, including bicycles.
- Pietro, an honest businessman, is wrongly accused of the murder of his business associate and jailed. Actually the man is alive and has set him up to avoid bankruptcy. Pietro's life is shattered of course and when after many years he is released from prison, he seeks revenge.
