- To celebrate the fact that she has worked at the office for thirty years Jamie throws a surprise 'This Is Your Life' style party for Vera. Zoe is late in turning up and Alec begins to fear that she has left him for Mark but when she arrives she gives a speech on how happy she is with Alec and they look forward to a continuing future together.
- Alec gives Zoe driving lessons as her birthday approaches but it puts a strain on their relationship. Hilary is intrigued by Miss Flood having phone conversations with a mystery man and when the manuscript of a romantic novel penned by one Elvira Storm arrives at the office it would seem that Miss Flood is the author. Zoe is expecting Alec may be giving her a car for her birthday but instead he pays for her to have driving lessons.
- Zoe and Alec meet up to discuss the divorce and discover a shared interest in stage musicals. Miles suggests Alec asks Zoe on a date but Alec believes he is too old for her. However When His daughter Simone attempts to match-make him with very merry widow Avril Dawlish, a situation from which he is rescued by Jamie,he comes to see that a date with Zoe might be very pleasant and they agree to go to see a musical version of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' together called 'Bottoms Up'.
- Jamie is disillusioned with working in his father's firm and,to Alec's disappointment,tells him that he wants to quit the law. When Alec agrees to give a talk to her school on a career as a solicitor she persuades Jamie to sit in at the back of the room. aware of his son's presence Alec gives an inspirational speech on the value of helping people and Jamie decides to stay on at the office.
- Determined to be a good father, Alec is taking more and more time off work to look after Fleur, leaving Zoe feeling under-mined and Jamie over-worked. When Zoe tries to use reverse psychology by suggesting she goes back to work and Alec become the house-husband, her ploy fails as he jumps at the chance. However, after Vera has made him see that he is neglecting Jamie, Alec appreciates that he should return to work and let Zoe look after Fleur.
- Zoe's divorce is finalised and Alec sees it as a cause for celebration,turning up at her flat with champagne. She sees things differently,leading to a row though they reconcile and spend the night together. Next day Miles tells Alec that his wife has run off with another man and he intends to take time off to try and win her back again.
- Jamie comes to work for his father as Miles pursues his errant wife. Alec agrees to have a proper meeting with Zoe's parents,minus his donkey's head,and though they are initially suspicious of his motives the parents get on famously with Alec,being of the same age group and having similar teen-age memories - so much so that Zoe feels rather left out. Afterwards Zoe and Alec dance to his old 1950s records and once again agree that they must counter the age group as best as they can.
- Valentine's day is approaching but Alec and Zoe have split up. Each blames the other but they are both miserable,neither wanting to be seen to give in first and ask for reconciliation. Thus Hilary takes the matter in hand,only to be sacked by Alec for interfering. However he and Zoe do get back together and Hilary is reinstated.
- Whilst arguing with Zoe as to whether Debbie or Simone should be Fleur's godmother Alec is told by his doctor that he has high blood pressure and must adopt a healthier life style. This makes Zoe aware of the age gap and her husband's mortality though Alec assures her he will be around for many more years. Hilary meanwhile believes that she is pregnant.
- Zoe's mother Dot Burgess arrives at the Callenders', having left her husband because she reckons he cares more about their shop than about her. At first Alec is pleased because she is a great help with Fleur and the house-work but after a while her presence begins to pall and Alec and Zoe end up reconciling the couple.
- Alec has been a solicitor for twenty-five years but most of his cases have been mundane,domestically-orientated with nothing to get thrilled about. So when he falls asleep he dreams that he is his idol,the fictional American brief perry Mason,with Miss Flood as his Girl Friday Della,Jamie as trusty sidekick Paul and Zoe as his dream girl. Somewhat unflatteringly Simone is cast as the murderess whom he brings to book.
- Hilary has moved to the Isle of Wight to be near Derek,who is in prison there. Vera has trouble in finding a replacement for her and,to Alec and Jamie's dismay, Simone fills in as a temp before Rosie, a Scots girl with a thick accent, is engaged. Zoe is also eager to return to work.
- Zoe is pregnant again and wants to have the baby in a birthing pool. Alec sees no point in this and they argue. However matters are taken out of their hands when she goes into labour whilst he is at court,working on his first really big case. He rushes to the hospital and has double cause for celebration - not only has Zoe given birth to a daughter,Fleur,but Jamie has won the court case for him in his absence and is given a partnership in the law firm.
- With Zoe returning to work the Callenders are on the look-out for a nanny for Fleur but neither advertising or approaching an agency yields a successful result. At a party at the vicarage Alec sees that Simone is actually very good with children and so,despite their past differences, Zoe agrees that she should be Fleur's carer.
- Zoe is keen for her and Alec to buy a house together and wonders why he is spending so much time attending to his current home. In fact he is doing it up to sell and,just as he gets a buyer,Jamie turns up wanting to move back in as he has split up with his girlfriend. At the office Miss Flood is taking time off to look after her poorly mother and Hilary,in her absence,is making changes that the Callenders do not appreciate.
- Alec is unsure as to whether to take up Zoe's suggestion and move in with her. Not only is this his first relationship since his widowhood but her flat is much smaller than his house. Jamie is all for it but Simone is,unsurprisingly,disapproving. Meanwhile Hilary rows with her boyfriend and ends up as Miss Flood's lodger.
- 1989–19947.4 (6)TV EpisodeAlec and Zoe return from their honeymoon to find a distinctly cold atmosphere at the office because Miss Flood is not happy about Hilary's engagement to Anthony. Simone is,of course,still not happy with her father's actions but she has news of her own - like Zoe she is also pregnant.
- Somewhat exhausted by his relationship with a much younger woman - and also,following a misunderstanding,suspecting Miss flood of being a drug dealer - Alec seems to be seeing less and less of Zoe and so,as a remedy,she suggests that they move in together . Jamie and his girlfriend have the same idea and the strait-laced Simone is shocked by her father's decision.
- Alec feels stupid after the encounter with Zoe's parents and asks her for dinner. Knowing that she is a P.T. teacher he swots up on sports to enable conversation. She does something similar, reading up on his idol Perry Mason. When she arrives they are initially halting as the topics of conversation are clearly false. However the ice is broken when they discuss their shared love of stage musicals.
- Alec and Zoe are about to go and see 'Bottoms Up' but she sprains her ankle and so he takes a reluctant Miss Flood instead,to the bewilderment of Jamie. in order to cheer Zoe up Alec borrows the donkey's head from the show and goes to see her,wearing it whilst serenading her and presenting her with flowers. Unfortunately her parents walk in on him and it is all rather embarrassing.
- Middle-aged widower Alec Callender is a solicitor, acting for twenty-something Zoe Angell in her divorce proceedings against her philandering husband Kevin. Not realising Alec's situation, Zoe accuses him of being hostile to people with marital problems and storms out. However, Alec's son Jamie explains the truth to Zoe and contact is resumed. Miss Flood, the firm's senior secretary is concerned that Alec's partner Miles, who is acting for Kevin's pregnant girlfriend, is also leading on new office junior Hilary.
- Zoe is going for promotion at work and Alec is unsuccessfully attempting to prove to her that winning is not everything - though she manages to beat him at chess and he only wins at Trivial Pursuit because,he suspects,she let him. In the event she loses out to her colleague Roy and learns to live with it. Hilary,meanwhile,is having a trial separation from her boyfriend Derek and is very interested when Miss Flood's young nephew Anthony arrives in town.
- Alec and Vera are perturbed when Jamie introduces his new one-stop solicitor scheme to the office and with good reason though Alec nips it in the bud. Zoe has introduced Debbie to a possible date,handsome young single parent Mark Lindsay but Alec is beginning to get jealous and suspects that Mark is more interested in his wife than her sister.
- As Zoe's sister Debbie has boyfriend trouble and Vera's efforts to get Hilary and Derek back together go awry Alec goes behind Zoe's back in putting Fleur's name down for an exclusive private girls' school. Zoe is horrified as this goes against her socialist principles though she is even more horrified when the school refuses to accept Fleur .
- It is a year since Zoe and Alec first began dating and he is being urged to propose. Zoe,however,having come out of a fairly recent divorce,is less keen to walk up the aisle again and wonders how to turn Alec down without hurting him. Jamie,meanwhile,gets into the spirit of things to help Miss Flood commemorate the anniversary of singer Buddy Holly's death.
- With the homeless Jamie sleeping on Zoe's sofa the house hunting begins in earnest though it takes a while for Zoe and Alec to find a home upon which they both agree and even then their troubles are far from over. Not only does Alec employ a cowboy builder but the house just happens to be opposite Simone,who does not approve of her father living in sin on her doorstep. Hilary,meanwhile,decides to learn Esperanto.
- Zoe is not happy when her sister Debbie announces that she has left boyfriend Trevor for Zoe's colleague and occasional past sleeping partner Roy. She wants Alec to influence Debbie in returning to Trevor though ultimately it turns out that Debbie has rejected both to live on her own. Vera meanwhile is not pleased when Jamie attempts to bring modernising equipment into the office.
- Alec is fifty-four and is given a birthday present from Zoe,a man made up of sugar lumps whom she calls her Sugar Daddy. She is invited along with Alec and Jamie to a birthday tea with Simone,Alec's daughter,a vicar's wife with two children. Simone is perfectly pleasant when she thinks that Zoe is Jamie's girlfriend but becomes hostile on learning that she is with Alec,believing her to be a gold digger. Alec and Zoe begin to see that their relationship may be harder than they expected.
- The big day is approaching for Vera Flood to marry her Gerald. She begins to doubt whether or not she is doing the right thing but, after a pep talk from Alec and Zoe, which strengthens their relationship, goes ahead with the wedding. Hilary, hopeful of wedding bells with Derek, aims to catch the bouquet but it falls apart in mid-air.
- Whilst Miss Flood is extremely happy because she has a gentleman friend,Gerald,who makes plaster casts,Hilary is miserable because Anthony has returned to Newcastle. Alec is not happy either because Jamie does not seem to be pulling his weight at work and plans to sack him until it is discovered that Jamie has a growth in his throat . An anxious Alec and Zoe wait at the hospital whilst it is operated on - successfully.
- Back with his father whilst recovering from the operation Jamie finds he is falling for Zoe but masks it by paying court to Hilary though he is relieved when Hilary goes to Newcastle,returning with Anthony. Miss Flood on the other hand is not dancing for joy. Zoe announces that she is pregnant and Alec decides they should visit his mother in Scotland to break the good news. However,on the way they stop off at Gretna Green for a secret wedding.
- Alec has a new client Peter Grant,who plays Inspector Dangerfield in a television series and Alec asks him to dinner. Zoe believes Alec is homophobic because of comments he has made about her new,gay colleague. However there is a surprise when he turns out to be Peter's partner. Hilary has split with Anthony but still advises Miss Flood on how to act when meeting Gerald's family.
- Alec's niece Clothilde comes over from Paris to improve her English and Alec thinks it would be a good idea for her to help the pregnant Zoe around the house. Zoe is less happy feeling that Alec doubts her ability to cope but Jamie thrives on having an attractive young lady to be seen around with. Eventually Clothilde appreciates that Zoe is fully able to cope on her own and returns to France.
- Zoe is suffering from severe post-natal depression and,in order to cheer her up, Alec takes her to a country hotel for a weekend. Jamie is not pleased as his father has left him to entertain an extremely boring client whilst Alec and Zoe get a shock when they encounter Hilary and Derek at their hotel, Hilary having won a weekend for two there in a competition.
- Alec is about to have a word with Miles after Miss Flood expresses disapproval about his taking Hilary away for a weekend. Fortunately,before Alec can jump in he learns that Miles is lending his weekend cottage to Hilary and her boyfriend. Zoe is rather over-awed by all the memories of Alec's late wife at his home so they agree to have a night at a hotel. On the way there she falls asleep so he drives her home,only to find that Jamie and his girlfriend are hoping to use his bedroom.
- Matt, a handsome young American teacher,comes to work at Zoe's school and they spend a lot of time together working on the school play. This makes Alec jealous so that,when his old flame Dollie,reappears in town,he is only too happy to flirt with her to make Zoe jealous. However this fails to work as Zoe's relationship with Matt is only a working one.
- Alec buys a Cluedo game at the church jumble sale and invites Miss Flood and Gerald and Hilary to come round and play it with himself,Zoe and Jamie. There is a bit of an anti-climax when Hilary reveals the killer's identity but,after everybody has left,a poorly Zoe is rushed to hospital where she suffers a miscarriage.
- Zoe is nervous as Jean-Claude,Alec's brother-in-law is visiting from Paris and Simone's constant praise of her late mother makes Zoe feel she should act like her. Sensing this,and wanting Zoe to act naturally,Alec pretends to have put Jean-Claude off but she sees through this when Jean-Claude rings to say that he will be late. However she appreciates the gesture. Miss Flood does not appreciate that Anthony and Derek are now both fighting over Hilary.
- Alec is concerned that Zoe seems to be in denial about the miscarriage. He gets her a dog to cheer her up but to no avail. Finally she breaks down and they have a heart to heart,deciding they should spend some time away together. With Anthony gone Hilary is now anxious to win back Derek whilst Miss Flood and Gerald announce their engagement.
