- Harry is selling the hardware store. It comes as a shock to the guys that gather there for man talk and tools. Al owns a percentage of the store, and Tim buys the rest. The business starts slow and then grows more than they can handle.
- Mark and his friend make a horror movie, with the Taylors being the stars. They are filmed as the perfect family. Tim and Jill view the movie; Mark is shown as the forgotten son who seeks evil, Jill worries Mark really feels forgotten.
- Randy and his girlfriend Lauren are selected to go to Costa Rica for a school program to study the rain forests. Jill is upset and does not want him to go. Tim tries to fix things by telling Randy he cannot go. Jill is more upset with this.
- Tim and Jill have dinner with Al and Trudy, his girlfriend for one month. Tim and Jill find out Trudy is wealthy. For the one month gift, Trudy gives Al a 1966 Ferrari. Al uncomfortably accepts the gift, but then returns it.
- When Wilson is the victim of a break-in, Jill becomes safety-obsessed and gets Tim to install a high-tech security system.
- Jill's sister Carrie stays with the Taylor's while in town for business. Tim's brother Jeff is over for dinner. Carrie and Jeff start seeing each other, and Jill does not think Jeff is good enough for her sister.
- Mr Binford of Binford Tools dies. There is sadness for all except for Tim. He does not know how to cry, but learns how to show grief.

- Wilson tells Tim his secret that he once saw a spaceship and aliens. Tim tells the others, who then all start to ridicule Wilson. Wilson feels betrayed and stops talking to Tim. Tim finds a way to apologize.
- Wilson disappears after hosting a Halloween party with his new romantic interest, a woman who claims to be a witch.
- Jill's mother is visiting for Christmas. It is the first one since her husband died. Jill has a hard time seeing her mother with another man. Meanwhile, Tim decorates for Christmas in his usual, over-the-top, way.
- Jill is invited to her Psychology Dept Potluck Dinner, but banned from taking food. Randy likes a girl at school but a friend of Brad's asks her out. On Tool Time, a woman who knows more than Tim about cars is a guest.
- Tim's friend Harry thinks his son Dennis is a slacker at work. Dennis takes a job to install a second phone for Tim; Harry accuses Dennis of not taking the job seriously. Tim wonders about his communication skills with his own children.
- Binford Tools hires a new manager to oversee the Tool Time Show. He wants Tim to have more explosions. Tim is against this. And, Al proposes to Trudy. He takes his mother to dinner to break the news to her.
- A journalist doing a feature on Tool Time is more interested in Tim than the tools. Neither her obvious advances, or her camera crew go down well with a sick Jill.
- The Taylors attend an annual hardware expo. Tim is in seventh heaven at the expo, and Jill has plans to spend quality time with the boys while sight-seeing. However, the boys want to pursue their own interests with people their age.
- Jill struggles in her piano lessons. Mark finds a new hobby in aviation, but Jill is hesitant to let him take to the sky.
- Tim is picking colors for his rebuilt convertible. Jill is asked to appear on a woman's talk show. She tries to explain Tim to the audience and it embarrasses and hurts Tim.
- Heidi has marital problems. Tim suggests that Al take Heidi out and talk with her. Heidi confides in Al, and he talks and listens to her. They become good friends. Tim wonders if there is more going on between them. At home, Jill has a cold.
- Al invests his life savings in the "Tool Time" board game.
- Tim is writing a book for Binford Tools, and since Jill and the boys are away for the weekend, Tim tries to write while home alone. But since he is alone, everything distracts him. He starts to dream of wealth and fame.
- It's Christmas time, and that means decorating in Tim's neighborhood. Al is excited to decorate his home for the first time, and proves to be competition for Tim. Randy comes home for Christmas and finds things changed since he left.
- It's Halloween, and the pranks begin. Brad and Randy begin with a head in the microwave, Tim and Jill follow up with actor playing a mysterious visitor. Brad and Randy find out and pretend to be frightened, causing Tim and Jill to worry.
- Jill and her sisters get together to plan on their parents' 50th wedding anniversary, but there's one problem; they can't stop bickering. After an unproductive first day, Jill talks to Tim and is telling him that her sisters' bickering is driving her nuts and she's tired of always having to be the sensible one. Tim tells her that she needs to lay down the law to put a stop to it. The next morning, Jill tries to have a truce declared between her and her sisters, but when they try to work on the party, they cannot agree on anything and the bickering continues. Jill says she had enough of this and storms out of the house. Her sisters shocked that she is acting this way, then Tim says the same thing to them but in a more abrasive way. After being away from the house Jill learns that she needs to say how she feels and in the end, her parents' anniversary party plans fall into place.
- Tim, Jill, Al, and Ilene attend the Cable Awards banquet, leaving Brad and his new older friend to babysit a sick Mark. The boys take the opportunity to throw a house party.
- Jill's operation is completed, and she has had a total hysterectomy. Jill is really upset at what this represents. Jill's mother visits to help around the house. Jill's mood swings are all over the place.
- Tim finishes rebuilding his hotrod, and he wants to do something to commemorate the event. He has Mark video the event. When the first video attempt is dull, he makes another video.
- For the first time, the TV ratings for Tool Time show that Al is more popular than Tim. Al decides to start doing promotions and Tim even helps him line up events. Then, Al hires a manager who tries to push too much too fast.
- Randy gets frustrated when Wilson directs the school production of Romeo and Juliet.
- The Tim Taylor family and Tim's brothers travel to their mother's home since she is moving. The brothers reminiscence over childhood items and things the dad built. The new owners come to see the house, the brothers find it hard to let go.
- Tim & Jill are to double date with Al & Ilene at a play, but first Tim and Al have to sell tickets to a hockey game. Tim & Al get caught scalping the tickets. Wilson watches the boys while Tim and Jill are out.
- Tim gives Marty a job on Tool Time.
- A scout from the UNC is interested in Brad for a soccer scholarship. Tim starts to coach him so he improves his game and chances for the scholarship. Brad's ego gets the best of him and he is kicked off the team at high school.
- The Taylor family vacation in northern Michigan, and Tim announces he wants the family to move there. Jill and the boys are not as enthused as Tim expected. Tim realizes he needs to change and grow.

- Jill wants Tim to convert their attic into office space for her. Tim is enthused, but then Jill changes her mind. They each come to realize why he needs to build it, and why she does not want it built.
- Tim finds the perfect Granite Guy to replace the kitchen counters. When he arrives, Jill recognizes him as the guy who asked her out at the gym, but doesn't tell Tim.
- Tim is invited to a Marine base for a special Tool Time episode, but is embarrassed when Jill proves more capable at driving a tank.
- After completing a hectic quarter in college and is on break, Jill gets a call from her Father, The Colonel that he will be paying a visit. Jill, feeling tired, tells a lie to him saying that it wouldn't be a good time to visit because she's feeling sick, but a few days later, he dies. Grief stricken and feeling very guilty for lying, she flies to Texas to help in the funeral arrangements and Tim and the boys will join her in a couple of days. While there, Jill tries to tell her Mom and her sisters that she's okay, but they think she's sick and is putting a brave front. During the funeral, the Minister presiding talks about how her Father valued honesty, which makes her feel worse. Jill decides to tell her Mom the truth about when he wanted to visit.
- Brad does not do well on his math test, and it may hurt his chances of getting into college. Wilson has a friend visiting from England; he owns a soccer team and extends an offer to Brad to play.
- When Tim finds out Marty is separated from his wife and living in the back of Harry's hardware store, Tim invites Marty and his children to stay with him and Jill. Tim turns out to be a great father to Marty's twins. Marty gets jealous.
- Brad's girlfriend Angela wants to set up Randy with her sister. Tim and Jill go bowling with Bud and his wife, Jean. Jean tells Tim to lose or Bud will fire him.
