- Mattimeo and the slaves make their first attempt to escape, valiantly led by Tess Churchmouse.
- To finally lift the siege, Constance creates a special crossbow to snipe Cluny dead, only for the warlord to learn of the plan and use it to his advantage.
- In the kitchens of Redwall Abbey, Mattimeo and Cornflower fights Vitch, who is a spy for Slagar. Slagar gains entry to Redwall disguised as a leader of a troupe of magicians.
- As Matthias is lost deep in Asmodeus's caverns, Cluny digs his way under Redwall.
- At Marshank, Brome watches Felldoh come under attack by Badrang's horde just as the Fur and Freedom Fighters arrive in support
- Cluny seizes the family of a dormouse and threatens to kill them unless their father, Plumpen, betrays Redwall and opens the gates to his huge army of rats.
- At Redwall, little Sister May comes up with a potion to drug the birds with food, and at the river it is a frightened Cheek who finally risks swimming, saving Matthias and company by eating vast numbers of nibbling fish.
- Matthias fights the slave master monster but falls into the abyss. Hanging onto a rope, Matthias falls into a basket after it was cut and meets Malkariss himself.
- Mattimeo and his companions race to the landslide beneath which their parents are buried and are seen by Slagar who sends rats to recapture them.

- Rose and friends battle Mirdop only to discover it is a giant doll created by timid rabbits to frighten away intruders. Upon learning of Martin's mission, the rabbits agree to help the travelers and warn them of cannibal lizards.
- Trapped in the tunnel the slaves are able to make a huge effort and break out
- Felldoh returns to camp with a strange and troubling levity. He seems to have made his mind up about something that he will not reveal. He creeps from the camp. Felldoh attacks Marshank alone, unaware that he is walking into a deadly trap.
- From Redwall Abbey, Warbeak and her sparra squadrons fly south unaware that their departure is observed by Ironbeak, an evil raven general who will invade Redwall as soon as Warbeak is gone.
- Nadaz, henchrat to the king of Malkariss orders the slaves anesthetized. Slagar's rats attack each other and in the chaos are captured by Matthias who demands they help him pursue Slagar.
- Matthias and company ascend the cliffs but come under attack. Across the river Mattimeo leads an escape of his own but is immediately recaptured. Back at Redwall, Ambrose Spike and others set traps for the invading birds.
- Redwall Abbey awakes to find their young ones are gone, and as they piece the previous night together realize that Mattimeo was right and that Vitch was the slaver's spy.
- Felldoh finds his father in a slave compound and they all escape over the wall, but the alarm was raised. The remaining slaves manage to escape. Martin and friends come face to face with The Mirdop, the monster.
- Brome announces his plan to save all the slaves. Brome kicks down the wall to reveal Grumm's escape tunnel to freedom. Rose and the others head for the distant mountains but are attacked by unruly and unpredictable rogue squirrels.
- Under attack by the Gawtrybe, Martin and friends seek shelter in a cave and meet the huge owl Boldred who helps by chasing the Gawtrybe away. Rose offers to show Martin and his friends the way to Noonvale by a tunnel through the mountain.
- Redwall Abbey is successfully fighting back utilizing the ruse of Martin's ghost and adds a new friend to its ranks in the form of Stryk, an enormous kite-bird.
- Slagar reaches The Abyss and forces the slaves across a rope bridge, cutting it away behind him. There is now no way for anyone to pursue him, or so he thought.
- At camp, around a blazing fire, Clogg makes plans to rebuild his ship but is interrupted by Ballaw and the Players. Impressing him with magic 'tricks' they persuade him to allow them into Marshank Prison to entertain Badrang.
- The Fur and Freedom Fighters batter the Marshank gates, but it will not yield and so they are forced to retreat.
- Cluny captures a travelling spice salesmouse and holds his wife. The fearful husband is forced to enter Redwall and take Cornflower captive in return for his wife.
- In the pit of the Kingdom of Malkariss, Matthias fights off Slagar who escapes to daylight as Matthias joins his battling friends.
- As Martin and his new friends languish in Marshank's Prison, Rose and Grumm hide from Clogg's advancing seaborne corsairs. Badrang and Clogg finally meet, pretending to be the other's friend, but they both soon skirmish and Clogg retreats.
- Martin, Rose and the other slaves flee Marshank Prison only to be lost at sea.
- Martin and friends survive the storm and as sun begins to shine, they paddle towards the shore.
- Matthias sets off to find Asmodeus and recapture Martin's sword.
- While Cluny plans to recapture the tapestry by burning down the Abbey gates, Matthias determines to renew his search for Martin's sword.
- On the beach, young Martin bids farewell to his noble father Luke who departs to drive away the raider pirates. Martin is soon captured and enslaved by Marshank's leader Badrang.
