What We Learned From the New 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Trailerby IMDb-Editors | last updated - 7 months ago
The full trailer for 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' suggests dark times are ahead for our heroes and villains. Here's what we learned. — Michael Rosser
The Last Jedi Speaks
After Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) was heard in the first teaser, stating that “it’s time for the Jedi to end,” he remains on ominous form in the full trailer.
As Rey (Daisy Ridley) demonstrates her power, the old Jedi looks terrified as he says, "I've seen this raw strength only once before. It didn't scare me enough then. It does now."
Whether he is talking about Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) or Darth Vader, this all happens with the music of Rey’s Theme and the Imperial March (aka Darth Vader’s Theme) intertwined in the background.
Rey Could Turn to the Dark Side
The trailer hints that Rey is on a knife edge, which could see her tip toward the Dark Side of the Force.
At the beginning of the footage, the mysterious Snoke (Andy Serkis), Supreme Leader of the First Order, is heard growling: "When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special."
A shot of Kylo Ren suggests that Snoke is talking to his disciple. But closer to the end of the trailer, it seems clear he is speaking to Rey, urging her, “Fulfill your destiny,” while holding her in the grip of the Force.
Kylo Ren Extends His Hand to Rey
Rey’s allegiance comes further into question when she is heard saying, “I need someone to show me my place in all of this,” as Kylo Ren extends his hand.
Could this be Rey taking her first steps towards the Dark Side? Or is it a ploy to get close to Snoke. Kylo also appears tortured, following the events of The Force Awakens, and is seen smashing his helmet. It feels as if both characters are at crucial crossroads.
Kylo has Leia in His Sights
We know that The Last Jedi will see the end of Leia’s story, following the sad death of actress Carrie Fisher. The full trailer hints at how Leia’s story could be resolved, with her estranged son Kylo Ren taking direct aim at her ship.
"Let the past die," says Kylo. "Kill it. If you have to," nodding to the tragic fate of his father, Han Solo.
Both Leia and Kylo are strong in the Force, and there appears to be a moment of silent communication between the two. But here’s hoping the filmmakers give the iconic character (and actress) a more heroic and peaceful ending.
Finn Faces Off With Phasma
After turning his back on the First Order, stormtrooper-turned-resistance hero Finn (John Boyega) appears to have gone undercover, dressed in a black uniform.
The mission leads to a clash with his old leader, Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie). Finn is armed with the riot control baton that the “traitor” stormtrooper wielded in The Force Awakens, while the formidable Phasma is armed with an extendable staff. Let’s get ready to rumble!
The Walking Dread
The First Order’s powerful new walkers are seen thumping along the mineral planet of Crait, preparing to take on the ski speeders of the Resistance.
The AT-M6 (All Terrain MegaCaliber Six), named for the laser cannon on its back, dwarf the Empire’s AT-ATs, which were first seen on the ice planet Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. A couple of these older models appear to be part of the lineup, revealing the scale of their simian-like upgrades.
It all adds up to a formidable foe for the Resistance, whose ski speeders were seen barely staying off the ground in the first teaser and will need more than a tow-rope to topple these armored beasts.
Dogfight Through Crait
After seeing the Millennium Falcon fly through a Death Star, asteroid belt, and space battles, we get a first look at the iconic ship flying through a planet.
Piloted by Chewbacca and pursued by tie-fighters, the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy” is seen being deftly maneuvered between the blood-red minerals beneath the surface of Crait. Punch it!
The Porg is the New BB-8
If rolling droid BB-8 was the surprise star of The Force Awakens, a new creature known as a porg looks set to be the scene-stealer of The Last Jedi. Native to Luke Skywalker's secluded island, one of the small, flat-muzzled avians appears to have stowed away on the Millennium Falcon and makes for an unlikely sidekick to Chewbacca. They've been described as "inquisitive creatures," and this one lets out its best little roar alongside Chewie, who could do with some company following the loss of Han Solo.
X-Wings Are Back in Action
X-wing pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is back in the cockpit to take on the enemy. The resistance fighter ship is seen lighting up its afterburner as Poe says: “We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down.”
Whether it will be enough to take on Kylo Ren’s nimble and deadly Tie Silencer remains to be seen.
What We Didn't See
The trailer held back on revealing characters that we know are set to appear in The Last Jedi. We still have yet to see newcomers to the saga Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as enigmatic scoundrel DJ, or Kelly Marie Tran as resistance fighter Rose Tico.
Unless further footage is revealed, we will have to wait until the film's release on Dec. 15.
