Jessica Stroup is best known for her roles on "90210" and "The Following," but in 2017 you'll know her as Joy Meachum on the latest Netflix Marvel series, "Iron Fist." Here are 6 things to know about the latest addition to the Marvel universe. — V. Wesley
She kicked off her career with the support of her mother and chewing gum.
At 17, Jessica deferred a scholarship to the University of Georgia and moved to Los Angeles with her mother to pursue an acting career. She supported herself for the first two years with modelling gigs and commercial work. Her first National ad was for Dentyne Ice gum.
She made her name on the reboot of a show she was too young to watch.
Jessica Stroup’s breakout role was in the 2008 reboot of the hit series “Beverly Hills, 90210.” (She was 4 when the original premiered in 1990.) Stroup played Erin Silver, snarky video blogger and half-sister of David Silver (Brian Austin Green) and stayed for the 5-year run of the series.
In 2014 Jessica joined the crime drama series “The Following” as Max Hardy, a NYPD cop and the niece of Kevin Bacon’s character, Ryan Hardy. In the beginning, Stroup admitted to being starstruck by her famous co-star: “He’s just the nicest guy in the world, and he’s super funny. He keeps me cracking up. But, I’m so very aware of the caliber of the things he’s worked.”
Her "Iron Fist" character may differ from the comics.
She joins the cast of Marvel’s "Iron Fist" as Joy Meachum, sister of Ward Meachum (Tom Pelphrey), and, according to comic lore, a singularly focused and brilliant business woman. Although in the comics Ward Meachum is her uncle, it seems that Netflix is looking to change things up with a brother-sister relationship. We’ll have to wait until 2017 to see what showrunner Scott Buck has in store for the cast of "Iron Fist."
