Simon Stubbs, who is in love with Widow Merritt, thinks he is a great politician, and arguing on the imminent elections in New York with his friend Binks, gets so angry on account of his disagreement, that he orders him from the house. After his departure he falls asleep and dreams that he is called upon by a deputation for the nomination of Mayor of New York. Mrs. Merritt pleads with him to stay, but he says that duty calls him. Then we see him going through the various phases of the campaign. He has good and troublesome times. At last he is elected by an enormous majority. Just then he receives a telegram saying that the Widow Merritt is going to marry Binks. He cannot stand it, and rushes to the train, only to reach his native town after the knot has been tied. He upbraids Mrs. Merritt, but is subsequently felled by a blow from Binks. Then he wakes up, and after taking a good drink, resolves to leave politics alone and marry Mrs. Merritt.
