- A story that begins on the South African veldt and goes to the drawing rooms of fashionable London Society.
- Lord Percy is eager to marry into the Brentwood family and hires struggling attorney John Stoddard to go to South Africa to find Lady Brentwood's long-lost granddaughter. While there, John rescues Margot from her brutal guardian, James Varley, and then, unable to locate the missing woman, decides to bring Margot back to London to pose as the granddaughter and marry Percy. Lady Brentwood, whose daughter was killed in South Africa, is delighted at finally having an heir, but then, conscience-stricken, John and Margot decide to confess. While they do so, however, Varley arrives, determined to gain revenge on John. Suddenly, though, he softens, and explains that he killed Margot's parents, who were Lady Brentwood's daughter and son-in-law, and raised their child. Then, after the discovery that she really is Lady Brentwood's heir, Margot decides to ignore Percy to marry John instead.—Pamela Short
- Lady Brentwood is constantly longing for her grandchild of whom no trace has been found since her parents perished in South Africa. She tells Lord Percy, a titled fortune hunter and distant relative, that if he will find her granddaughter, he may marry her and share the estate. He imparts this news to Pantani, his friend and confidential agent, and they make arrangements to send John Stoddard, struggling attorney, into South Africa to find the heiress, or a substitute. Margot, a delicate little girl, is the family drudge of John Varley, a drunken South African farmer. She is forced to work in the fields. Varley sends her to Krogler, for forty pounds, the amount of his indebtedness. Krogler goes to Margot's room at night and she flees. She is overtaken by Krogler and her screams are heard by Stoddard, who rescues her. Stoddard has previously whipped Varley with the lash which he was wielding upon Margot, and he now takes the girl to his own cabin. Lord Percy instructs him to present Margot to Lady Brentwood as the last grandchild and Stoddard makes Varley and Krogler sign a receipt for forty pounds, the price he pays for Margot's release. Lady Brentwood's cordial reception wins the girl's love and a wonderful transformation takes place in Margot, now Alice. Stoddard and Alice decide to make known to Lady Brentwood their deception, and as the girl is telling the old lady she is an impostor, Varley enters and states that she belongs to him. Lady Brentwood leads the way to the art gallery and takes them to her daughter's portrait, telling Margot, who is dressed in an old gown she has found, that this is her mother, who in the picture is wearing the same gown. Varley then confesses that he took Margot from her dying mother's arms. Stoddard, conscience-stricken at his part in the deception, is reminded by Margot that he bought her, and quickly takes her into his arms.—Moving Picture World synopsis
