Well, not to be too critical here, it's Stan Laurel after all. This is a quick twelve minute short that if nothing else, gives a quick glimpse of Stan's early comedic timing. The story is set in a citrus grove and fruit packing plant, and shows Stan in a series of contrived mishaps involving mechanized equipment and fellow co-workers. I was more than a little surprised to see that one of Stan's orchard pals was actually bigger than Ollie, and had to wonder whether this gave some director the inspiration to team him up with someone of similar girth for good. There are a few unique bits here, like that motorized conveyor belt contraption built around a bicycle, and the timing of those catapult thrusts of the orange crates into the upper part of the holding area. While watching I concluded that the idea for Lucille Ball's chocolates assembly line had to come from somewhere, so there might have been some inspiration here as well. If you're a Laurel and Hardy fan you'll probably want to catch this one with all of their other film shorts, but be advised that their best work was yet to come.
