Pictorially impressive, dramatically thin
Report from Cinesation 2006: HOPE (**) The Canadian archive surprise was one of four two- reelers directed by a photographer and artist with the unimprovable name of Lejaren à Hiller, each intended to illustrate the story that might lie behind a "great" painting-- in this case a bit of pre-Raphaelite symbolism by George Frederick Watts. (You can find it at the Tate Gallery's website, incidentally.) The result is basically a 1922 version of a 1912 Biograph about a girl who thinks her love is lost at sea (but she never loses... Hope!), and it's basically hooey, but it was very artistically shot, and the girl is Mary Astor at that moment when she was, probably, the most beautiful woman of the silent screen.
