Turpin is Priceless in Fun Comedy
The Daredevil (1923)
*** (out of 4)
Very funny short from Mack Sennett has a movie director (Harry Gribbon) being impressed with the accidental "work" of a stunt man (Ben Turpin) so he decides to cast him in his next Western not fully realizing how stupid the man is. THE DAREDEVIL is pure madness that only someone like Turpin could do and pull off. It's really amazing to see what terrific shape Turpin was in during this period and especially when you consider his age at the time. I was really impressed with several things in the picture but there's no question that the majority of the credit has to go to the star. Those cross-eyes really work well here and especially in a hilarious bit where he's supposed to shoot an apple off a guy's head. This entire sequence is just priceless as is another one at the end where various real life incidents are happening and the director wants to get his "star" in on them so they run around town filming the Western hero doing various dangerous stunts that Turpin really shouldn't be doing. Fans of Turpin are certainly going to enjoy this film and if you've never seen one of his films then this here is a great place to start.
