    A Cold Shoot
J.B. Warner (as Jim Laraine) is an Idaho rancher; his life is centered around pleasing his elderly mother. He loves his mother so much that he arranges to take the blame when his wayward, trouble-making brother commits a murder. Warner knows his brother is too weak to escape retribution; and, he doesn't want to break his dear mother's tender heart. So, Warner takes the blame; then, he heads for Montana, "Wanted by the Law". Soon, Warner acquires wife Dorothy Wood (as Jessie Walton) in order to protect the nubile lass from a mass abduction, after she arrives to serve as a "cook" for a tavern of love-starved men. Turns out, Ms. Wood wasn't really a cook; and, of course, Warner's past catches up with him…

Writer-director Robert N. Bradbury's story is easy to follow, even when it doesn't make much sense. My guess was that the missing button discovered with the old prospector would tie in, somehow, with Warner's brother, and the mysterious "Dan Blake". It's not that complicated, by a long shot. Still, the ending holds a surprise.

Elvert MacManigal's location photography suffers from film deterioration, sadly. And, star Warner died within the year, of tuberculosis. Fist-fighting Jay Morley (as Bill Baxter) and spitting William McCall (as Bush McGraw) are fine as a couple of villains. However, Frank Rice (as Jerry Hawkins)'s eye-rolling is sometimes painful to watch.
