Exciting but silly in spots
This is one of the small handful of available films starring the great, original "Rin Tin Tin", Warner Brothers' "mortgage lifter". He saved that studio from financial disaster. Yes, because of a dog, we now have the pop culture monster that is Warner.
That said, the video I purchased from Facets contains non-stop action, nail biting suspense and genuinely heartwarming scenes between Jason Robards, his boss's daughter (Virginia Browne Faire) and the German Shepherds Rin Tin Tin and Nanette. The silly bits I mentioned involve having Rinty, as "Satan", exhibiting 'way too much intelligence. I mean, what dog would know what levers to turn to make the flood gates of a dam close up? Give us a break! There are a few plot discontinuities too. One can forgive this film for these problems because it was made in the days before movies became self-conscious and cynical.
