Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

When the internet spent the better part of a week in February roasting a Willy Wonka-themed family event in Glasgow gone wrong, there was a lot to laugh about: the mostly undecorated warehouse venue, the AI-generated advertising, the lack of chocolate, and, of course, the sad Oompa Loompa.
The local actors hired to improvise based off a garbled script (also written by AI) wound up dishing on the disaster in interviews, and some have since leveraged their viral fame: that Oompa Loompa (real name Kristy Paterson) is selling Cameo greetings,...

Kaledonia Pictures says it’s making The Unknown, loosely based on the doomed Willy’s Chocolate Experience; organiser says it was unaware about the film.
Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, a calamitous live family event held in late February that went viral, continues to make headlines. And among all the memes and accounts of what went wrong – taken from jobbing actors involved in the event – there emerged the story that a film was being made, loosely based on a character connected to it all.
That film is said to be a horror film called The Unknown, and according to its production company, Kaledonia Pictures, it’s set for release later this year.
According to the event organiser behind the experience, however – a company called House Of Illuminati, founded by Glaswegian Billy Coull – it had no previous knowledge of the film. Nor, it says, does it have any connection to Kaledonia Pictures,...

Ever since people saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it has been somewhat of a dream to visit Willy Wonka’s incredible, yet fictional, chocolate factory. How much fun it would’ve been to get to eat the candy growing on trees, to take a boat ride in the chocolate river, and to try the gum that tastes like a three-course meal? Well, maybe not the last one.
Either way, Willy Wonka’s factory was a dream place for many kids, and may we add, many adults as well!
A still from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Recently, fans had the opportunity to witness the magic of Willy Wonka’s work through the event titled, ‘Willy’s Chocolate Experience,’ or the ‘Willy Wonka Experience.’ Unfortunately, the event turned out to be as underwhelming as rain or a beach day. Kaledonia Pictures, the production company making Wonka experience-inspired film The Unknown, appears to be rather new, with its website only appearing a matter of days ago.
The past day has brought a new twist to the ongoing saga of the Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, which went viral in late February: a production company called Kaledonia Pictures is working on a film loosely based on it, called The Unknown. It’s said to be some sort of supernatural horror about a “renowned illustrator and his wife who are haunted by the tragic death of their son,” and encounter an “unknowable evil” in the Scottish Highlands.
Filmmakers hurriedly cashing in on events isn’t new – hence the assorted horror films based on the newly-out-of-copyright Steamboat Willie that are currently in the works.
What is somewhat odd about The Unknown, however, is that Kaledonia Pictures has almost no internet footprint whatsoever.

The Unknown, the villain at the viral Willy Wonka Experience is getting their own horror movie, because of course they are. More on the story below.
Only a week after Glasgow’s Willy Wonka Experience went viral, a new horror film centred on The Unknown has been announced. The film will simply be titled The Unknown and will follow a couple who have recently lost their son.
Photos from the experience, including one of The Unknown, spread online like wildfire after the police were reportedly called to the event which left children in tears and parents furious. The event was marketed with highly misleading, AI-generated artwork. The company behind the event, House of Illuminati, have promised full refunds to visitors.
The news of the new horror film comes via Bloody Disgusting, who report that Scotland-based production company Kaledonia Pictures is working on it. The Unknown has bugger all to do...

By now, you’ve likely seen the “Willy Wonka Experience” going viral throughout the Internet.
The event which was hosted in Glasgow, called “Willy’s Chocolate Experience,” used false AI art to advertise what was meant to be an immersive, Willy Wonka-themed experience, and the resulting videos of the experience revealed that it as actually a low-budget, widely mocked mess in a sparsely decorated warehouse with character actors hired from Indeed.
Videos soon went viral of the event on social media, including children looking scared and weeping.
Now, a film production company is getting ahead of the viral sensation by announcing The Unknown, a horror movie coming from Scotland-based film production company Kaledonia Pictures.
Keep reading to find out more…
The Unknown is based on one of the characters wearing a silver mask at the event, which also had nothing to do with the Wonka movies.

It’s a longstanding tradition for the horror world to capitalize on trends and turn literally anything and everything into a horror movie, so it’s no big surprise that a horror movie based on the viral “Willy Wonka Experience” has already been announced. It’s titled The Unknown, announced this morning by Scotland-based film production company Kaledonia Pictures.
The unofficial “Willy Wonka Experience” took the internet by storm last week (read all about it here), essentially becoming this year’s answer to the disastrous Fyre Festival. Long story short, AI-generated artwork was employed to lure the unsuspecting Glasgow public into what looked to be an immersive, Willy Wonka-themed experience ripped straight out of the movies, but what they instead found was a warehouse sparsely decorated with dollar store decorations and populated by characters that looked like they were pulled out of, well, horror movies.

It’s just a fact that, for all their wonder and whimsy, Roald Dahl‘s children’s books can be terrifying. The heroine of Matilda, abandoned to a strict school by uncaring parents, must survive the cruelties of the headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. Unlike the friendly giant of the title, the other giants in The Bfg snatch humans to eat from their beds every night. The Witches concerns a conspiracy of demonic crones bent on eradicating kids altogether.

Behaviour Interactive’s cheekiness last week has led up to the announcement today of the newest chapter for Dead by Daylight in “All Things Wicked”. Taking players to a place with more questions than answers, the new chapter will arrive March 12, and introduces a new Killer in The Unknown, a new Survivor, and a new Map in the “ominously quiet” Greenville Square.
In keeping with last week’s video, The Unknown is very much a mystery. The press release for “All Things Wicked” has pulled the [Redacted] move, blacking out a description for the new Killer while teasing it’s main ability: a deadly toxin that causes Survivors to hallucinate. The Unknown apparently is also able to create husks of itself, allowing it to potentiality swap places with these husks to move around the map.

It's fair to say that Padmé Amidala is one of the "Star Wars" saga's most underappreciated characters. She played something of a thankless role throughout the prequel trilogy; while she's probably known best as Anakin Skywalker's romantic foil, she was so much more in the grand scheme.
Much ink has been spilled on Padmé's importance to the Galactic Republic, especially in "Episode II — Attack of the Clones." It's her fierce independence and general aversion to authority that made her such a threat to then-chancellor Palpatine. Most of his dastardly plans include efforts to remove Padmé entirely from the equation, either through the invasion of Naboo in "The Phantom Menace," or through a handful of assassination attempts.
Fortunately, Padmé managed to stick around longer than anyone expected her to. Her presence was a welcome challenge to the tyranny of the fledgling Empire, but also to the prequels' overwhelmingly male ensemble.

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

The three films included on the Criterion Collection’s Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers collectively suggest a miniature narrative of Browning’s evolution as a filmmaker. Though this two-disc set offers but a dip of the toe into Browning’s work, it’s governed by a persuasive through line. Here we get a film, 1925’s The Mystic, that’s rich in promise and less personal than the other two, one a perverse masterwork, 1927’s The Unknown, that’s criminally underseen by contemporary audiences, and the other a cult classic, 1932’s Freaks, that’s too often discussed in terms of its notoriety. Watching these films together offers a sketch of an artist’s sensibility reaching fruition, as a fine-grained empathy rises to the fore.
Browning’s affinity for outcasts has been well-documented and is discussed at length in the supplements included with this set, particularly in a new interview with author...

Coming this October, “three Pre-code chillers from a master of the morbid; a gothic supernatural tale; & a haunting modern-day fable of cultural dislocation in NYC.”
Those films are Freaks, The Unknown and The Mystic, packaged together in Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers; The Others (2001); and Nanny (2022). Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers will first be added to the Criterion Collection on October 17, followed by Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others on October 24 and Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny on October 31.
Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers:
“The world is a carnival of criminality, corruption, and psychosexual strangeness in the twisted pre-Code shockers of Tod Browning. Early Hollywood’s edgiest auteur, Browning drew on his experiences as a circus performer to create subversive pulp entertainments set amid the world of traveling sideshows,...

Nowadays a spooktacular Shocktober means 4K restorations––just look at the work from Arrow or Shout Factory (naming only the two most obvious) to elevate that most disreputable genre into incredible resolution and detail. Never one to miss an opportunity, Criterion will upgrade two of the greatest horror films ever made: David Cronenberg’s Videodrome and Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, for those who want explosive tumors and Donald Sutherland’s penis (respectively and respectfully) in the finest possible quality home video affords.
While the Nicole Kidman-led Blockbuster Video classic The Others rounds out 4K selections, the Blu-only Tod Browning set boasts Freaks, The Unknown, and The Mystic. Lastly, Nikyatu Jusu’s 2022 Sundance winner Nanny is now among the newer titles in Criterion’s canon.

The Intl. Emerging Film Talent Assn. returns to Cannes for the 13th year with a series of events to showcase new faces from underrepresented regions. The lineup will include screenings of films centering on refugees, a cash award for a documentary and spotlights on Arab and Sudanese cinema.
For the sixth year, Iefta is collaborating with the United Nations Refugee Agency (Unhcr) at the Marche du Film. The program presents filmmakers — a number of them refugees themselves — who are documenting the experiences of those forced to flee from violence, famine or political oppression.
The Un agency and Iefta provide filmmaking tools and training to those affected. Refugees speak out about loss and desperation, but also resilience and hope.
“Refugee Voices in Films” this year features films from the Sudan Workshop focusing on the Horn of Africa. The Sudan Workshop is part of Unhcr’s developmental program with refugee filmmakers.

“I want you to promise to keep this a secret, from everyone,” says Edward C. Burke, a mysterious professor played by mythic master of the macabre, Lon Chaney Sr. The line is a warning to a mourning daughter in the surviving screenplay for London After Midnight; it’s also part of the eeriest horror movies of the silent era. Unfortunately though, director Tod Browning’s 1927 classic has become one of the most inadvertently well-kept secrets of Hollywood, even as it remains one of the most influential works in horror movie history. If only we could see it.
While the film has been lost to time, the ghastly image of Chaney’s vampire in the film has lingered in the pop culture imagination, influencing everything from the earliest Hollywood Dracula film of 1931, which was originally supposed to star Chaney until his death in 1930, to seemingly this year’s recent Renfield reimagining at the same studio.

Stormy Daniels becomes a dating show host in Canada’s “For the Love of DILFs,” combining two groups of “internet’s favorite gay archetypes: Himbos and daddies.” Produced by Daddy TV, it premiered in January.
“I was brought here by Doctor Dilf, a mysterious gay relationship expert, to help these singles find the man of their dreams. I know it sounds kind of weird but hey, the check cleared. And I love a good check, so here I am,” she said in the trailer presented at MipTV’s Fresh TV Formats, hosted by The Wit.
According to The Wit CEO Virginia Mouseler, moderating the showcase, “The Traitors” and “FBoy Island” are the true trendsetting formats of the season.
“We have a business trend here: IP from P to P, format adaptations from platform to platform. Format travels via the same platform from country to country,” she stated, mentioning (HBO) Max,...

The Traitors has done for formats what Top Gun: Maverick “did for the summer blockbuster,” says Glenn Hugill, with barely a hint of hyperbole.
Deal or No Deal exec Hugill, who was not involved with the creation of the The Traitors, believes its success “benefits all of us in the business.” He is one of several unscripted creatives and sellers who tell Deadline they are bullish about the state of the sector.
As these execs gear up for next week’s Mip TV confab in Cannes, Hugill does not refrain from talking up The Traitors’ impact, a show that has now made waves in the U.S., UK, Australia, France and a number of European territories, along with its home country of The Netherlands where it was forged by All3Media label Idtv.

Taking place from March 17 - 26 in NYC, Film at Lincoln Center presents Unspeakable: The Films of Tod Browning, an extensive retrospective screening series from one of the first masters of horror! We have more details and the trailer below, along with discount codes and details on how you can win an all access pass:
"Featuring 35mm screenings, new restorations, and live piano accompaniment, Unspeakable: The Films of Tod Browning takes place in our theaters March 17-26.
Tod Browning (1880–1962) ranks among the most original and enigmatic filmmakers of his time. Born Charles Albert Browning, Jr., son of a middle-class family, he ran away from his Kentucky home at age 16 to join the circus, where he took jobs as a barker, a contortionist, a clown, and a somnambulist buried alive in a box with its own ventilation system. Following a stint in vaudeville and adopting the moniker Tod (German for “death”), Browning...

National Anthem Review: Classic Americana Is Turned On Its Head In Powerful Queer Ballad [SXSW 2023]
In our turbulent sociopolitical climate, it can be hard to remember how important fostering community among fellow LGBTQ individuals is. This is especially true if you're in the South or Southwest, where conservative ideals still reign supreme to the point where it might feel suffocating. It may seem hopeless to realize who you really are, but when you do find your people, it can be the most freeing feeling in the world.
That feeling lies at the center of visual artist Luke Gilford's feature debut, "National Anthem." Set against the sprawling landscapes of New Mexico, the film centers around Dylan (Charlie Plummer), a lonely construction worker who takes an odd job at the House of Splendor ranch. There, his life forever changes when he meets rodeo performers and ranchers from across the queer spectrum, leading to his sexual and gender awakening. From the impressive cinematography to its refreshingly non-pandering script,...

Credited as a pioneering director who helped create the horror film genre, Tod Browning‘s influence can be seen in the work of David Lynch, John Waters, Guillermo del Toro, and David Cronenberg, and Film at Lincoln Center pays tribute to Browning this month.
Film at Lincoln Center has announced Unspeakable: The Films of Tod Browning, a retrospective of the pioneering filmmaker’s career consisting of 17 films presented almost entirely on 35mm, running from March 17 through 26.

After five years of quietly gathering steam within the international TV community, the 2023 edition of the London TV Screenings is its biggest outing yet.
Running Feb. 27 to March 3, the event features more than 25 distributors and 400 buyers. But how did the confab evolve from a set of casual screenings by rival distributors of the BBC into an event that now rivals MipTV in Cannes?
Its genesis goes back to 1976, when BBC Showcase was created from 25 European buyers gathering in Brighton’s Old Ship Hotel to watch episodes of shows such as “Fawlty Towers,” and buy such programs for audiences back in their home countries. The showcase then moved to other locations, including Edinburgh and Harrogate, before returning to Brighton, and eventually relocating to Liverpool in 2012.
The number of distributors and rivals to the BBC grew, so they arranged meetings with buyers and partners in London after the Showcase and began to...

Based on what we’re hearing from Disney, the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, now on Disney Plus, will be with us on February 17th, 2020. One of the more challenging aspects of the animated series, though, is that you won’t get a chronological experience by just following the released episode order. Thankfully, then, we now have a correct viewing order courtesy of the official Star Wars site, which tells us all you need to know to catch up on The Clone Wars before its return.
The Clone Wars bridges the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, providing a significant level of detail for anyone wondering what was going on in between the two prequel movies. When aired, episodes could often be bundled together as arcs, linked by one-off episodes that might explore a different part of the galaxy adjacent...

We’ve spent the better part of the last few weeks toasting not only the noteworthy TV accomplishments of this year, but the decade overall. With all the riches that TV has to offer, it can be hard to come up with new ways of saying, “Hey, this thing is good! You should try it if you haven’t already!”
So, at the risk of repeating ourselves, we’ve gathered the top achievements from 2019 on a purely episodic level. Some of these are chapters nested in a much grander arc that require hours of prior viewing to fully appreciate. Others are masterfully executed one-offs that can be enjoyed purely on their own.
Regardless of the reasons for us picking them here, these episodes all underline the idea that TV isn’t just a sea of 6- or 8- or 10- or 12-hour movies. At their best, they can highlight the...

Everything was in its (seeming) right place at the conclusion of Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s 2013 animated smash hit “Frozen,” as long-suffering princesses Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) were reunited, the kingdom of Arendelle was freed from its eternal winter, Elsa was crowned queen (with her magic intact and appreciated), and Anna had found love with a doofy regular dude after banishing a nefarious smooth-talking wannabe Prince Charming type. Still, fans of the Disney feature have long clamored for a sequel to the musical charmer, if only to spend more time with a cadre of cute characters inside an inventive new world.
Perhaps they should have been careful what they wished for, if only because it’s about to be upended by a fresh new story.
Sure, Elsa eventually ascended to the throne, leaving her self-created ice castle behind and slipping into a role that had long been carved out for her,...

For Sam Fox’s 50th birthday, she gave herself the gift of peace. Of acquiescence. A break from her persistent quest for perfection — not that she thinks she’s perfect, but, like most people, she wants to get it right whenever possible. Mainly, Pamela Adlon’s lead character wants to be good to her daughters, but there’s Rich (Diedrich Bader), her mom (Celia Imrie), and her friends, as well. There are a lot of folks to look after in Sam’s life, and yet, as Season 3 made clear, who she really needs to look after is herself.
Ghosts haunted Sam this season. If they had to go through her family to get to her, so be it, but they drove her back into her memories, her past, and the problems they create in her present. Self-assessment became a fixture in Sam’s life,...

"I just figured this would be happening in the Us." One of the characters early on in Red Letter Day elucidates the sometimes subtle (sometimes not) passive-agressive smugness in the Canadian attitude, as defined by self-comparison to the American experiment down below. Chaos and murder erupt, between so-called normal people, when a shadowy anarchist group, called The Unknown, mails out a series of letters - red paper, in bright red envelopes - to the residents of an upscale Calgary suburb. Everyone, child and adult alike, in Aspen Ridge receives one, which has the picture and address of someone they are urged to murder Asap. The intended victim has a mirror letter asking the same: kill them before they might kill you. At first, single mom Melanie...

When I started the Crypt of Curiosities, I did it with the explicit intention to introduce people to the weird, wild corners of genre cinema. Shaw Brothers’ Black Magic, Hammer mummies, hyper-violent anime, sadistic Spaghetti Westerns—it’s an exercise in peering into the odd expanses that deserve more attention. It’s about championing the under-championed.
So, admittedly, writing about one of the most recognizable, celebrated horror films ever made might seem a bit off. But there’s a catch. Because, like many films of its time, there were actually two versions of Dracula in 1931: Tod Browning’s iconic English-language one, and the much less beloved Spanish-language Drácula. While the former has gone on to become a classic, the latter has languished in relative obscurity, beloved by a small cult but otherwise alien to most viewers. So, I figured this would be a good opportunity to look at the two side by side,...

With the release of It Chapter Two, we take a look at one of the first creepy clown films.
As a culture, we seriously hate our clowns. A deep-seated and supposedly irrational fear of clowns is so commonplace it’s even been given a scientific name: coulrophobia. It’s hardly a surprise then that angry, axe-wielding or merely creepy clowns would become such a pop cultural mainstay, from The Simpsons and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and more recently from Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight to Stephen King’s It and It Chapter Two. The 2015 St. Louis International Film Festival, also known as Sliff, has begun. Even though Alex Winter couldn’t bring Freaked in town, he did bring his two great tech documentaries, Downloaded and Deep Web – in addition to being awesome to us and presenting Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Sliff has a robust schedule full of independent and foreign cinema along with some mainstream affair like Legend starring Tom Hardy and some possible future Oscar contenders like Carol. However, since we are a horror website, we are going to highlight some films that should definitely be on your radar!
