Bonnie Jordan (Joan Crawford) is a spoiled heiress with a liberated attitude toward sex, which includes rich playboy Bob (Lester Vail), her current boyfriend. However, when the stock market crash wipes out her father's (William Holden) fortune, she and her indolent brother Rodney (William Bakewell) are left to their own devices. An ambitious and spunky Bonnie aspires to a journalistic career and is mentored as a novice reporter by veteran newsman Bert Scranton (Cliff Edwards) while her weakling brother becomes involved with the notorious Jake Luva (Clark Gable) Gang. Utilizing poor judgment, he unwittingly becomes the wheelman in a St. Valentine's-type massacre of rival gangsters. Bonnie becomes romantically involved with the amorous Luva when she infiltrates the mob by posing as dancer in his nightclub. There she learns that Rodney has been bullied into being an accessory to Bert Scranton's murder. The situation becomes even more complicated when Bob reenters her life with an offer of renewed romance and a nightclub of her own to perform in, an offer she must refuse or risk exposure.
