Quotes

  • Jerry Stevens : Say, what brought you here?

Dot Stevens : My roommate. She sold me on the idea that I *might* do a little gold-digging on the premises.

Jerry Stevens : Who was the prospective victim?

    Dot Stevens : You.

Jerry Stevens : Me? Haha. Well, why not?

Dot Stevens : You don't know, mister, what tough lives we working gals lead. Why even now, there's someone waitin' at home for me, old, and worried, and suffering...

Jerry Stevens : Mother, I suppose.

Dot Stevens : No. My landlady. We're ten days behind in the rent.

  • Jerry Stevens : [greeting her the following morning, after the sham marriage he's foisted on her]  Well, I was pretty well swacked last night.

Dot Stevens : Yeah, when you started to see those pink elephants, I thought I'd have to call for an animal trainer.

Jerry Stevens : Haha. You're a nice girl, and I'm terribly relieved. Now, you're gonna' look at matters sensibly, aren't you?

Dot Stevens : [a bit confused]  What are you driving at, Jerry?

Jerry Stevens : Well, any settlement you want will be made, of course. And the divorce will be arranged quietly.

    Dot Stevens : [taken aback]  Well, I... I don't want a divorce...

Jerry Stevens : Oh, I know this was all my fault. And I'm sorry.

Dot Stevens : Oh, but listen, Jerry. I can't say it the way I should, maybe, but... I'm in love with you.

Jerry Stevens : Now, be reasonable. This was a gin marriage.

Dot Stevens : Well, *you* were ginned up, but I wasn't.

Jerry Stevens : Haha, I know. And I've got the morning-after headache. And I'm willing to pay for it liberally. Now, that seems fair to me.

Dot Stevens : Well, it would be, if I was in that business, but I'm not. Can't you see, Jerry? I love you!

[hugs him, but he rejects her]

Jerry Stevens : Smarter than I thought. More in it for you being "Mrs. Jerry Seevers," huh? Well, it won't work.

  • Dot Stevens : Listen, I married you straight and square. You can't laugh *that* off.

Jerry Stevens : No, but a good lawyer can. Now, you take my advice, and accept a nice big generous settlement.

    Dot Stevens : But I don't want a settlement!

Jerry Stevens : Now look, monkey: there's no reason for you and me quarrelling.

Jerry Stevens : [pulls out his wallet, takes out several bills]  Here's a couple hundred... and here's my lawyer's card... and goodbye.

[unceremoniously leaves the room while Dot stands there dumbstruck]
