While driving Virginia to the school, Ralph pulls up next to a horse-drawn Borden Milk wagon. Horse-drawn milk wagons were common through much of the 1940s because they were cheaper to own and maintain than trucks. Gas rationing and rubber shortages during World War II also made horse-drawn milk wagons more practical than trucks. Milk was delivered by horse-drawn wagon in some rural areas into the early 1950s when they were finally phased out.
