Back in her hometown Sadie becomes involved with Michael's chronically alcoholic millionaire boss Brennan and marries him for his money. Michael views her as a gold-digger at first, but then sees her help Brennan beat his alcoholism. Sadie leaves Brennan to try to find Tommy when she hears that her old flame is in trouble. - In Richley, New York, Sadie McKee works as a maid in the Alderson mansion where her mother is the cook. When their employer's son Michael Alderson, who was raised with Sadie and is now a successful lawyer, returns from New York City after two years, his family throws a dinner party for family and friends. While serving soup, Sadie overhears Michael's comments about her boyfriend Tommy Wallace, who was fire from the Alderson factory and accused of being a dishonest person; Sadie tells Michael and his friends that they're being insensitive. She decides to flee to New York City with Tommy to get married and find a job. They befriend Opal and she takes them to the low-budget boardinghouse where she lives. The next morning, Sadie leaves the boardinghouse to seek a job and marry her beloved Tommy. But his next-room neighbor Dolly Merrick overhears him singing and seduces him to travel with her in an itinerant show business. Sadie prepares to return home, but Opal convinces her to stay. She finds a job as a nightclub dancer; 10 days later, an alcoholic customer helps her get rid of an abusive one and invites her to join him at his table. She learns that he is millionaire Jack Brennan and his friend is Michael Alderson. When Michael patronizes her, telling to leave Jack, she is still angry with Michael and stays with Jack, who proposes to her. She accepts and is seen by the society as a gold-digger.
