- A scientist discovers a formula for making synthetic gold.
- Chapter One WHO IS THE CLUTCHING HAND? - Dr. Paul Gironda (Robert Frazier) claims that he has found a formula for making synthetic gold. He is to show his discovery to the Board of Directors of the International Research Foundation, who have hired him to make all the necessary laboratory tests. Alone in his lab just before the meeting takes place, he is attacked and when aide, attracted by his screams, arrives. Gironda has disappeared. Walter Jamesion (Rex Lease), a newspaper reporter and the fiance of Dr. Gironda's daughter, Verna (Marion Shilling) immediately calls for the eminent detective, Criag Kennedy (Jack Mulhall), on the case. Kennedy appears at the house and instantly starts to search Gironda's lad for the missing gold formula. A hidden hand fires the lab, and Kennedy is trapped. - Chapter Two SHADOW - Kennedy tries frantically to escape and suddenly his hand touches a trick switch which opens a trap door, and Kennedy escapes. Kennedy jumps into his car and sets out after the shadowy figure of the Clutching Hand. He is foiled by a truck-driver who blocks his path and engages him in a hand-to-hand fight. Kennedy overcomes the assailant. He is now unable to trace the Clutching Hand, and he sets off Gironda's estate. He meets Jameson and they proceed together. Hearing a strange noise, they abandon Kennedy's car to investigate and are surprised to see a strange figure jump in the car and speed off. They grab a nearby taxicab and give chase but the driver(Allen Mathews), hired by the Clutching Hand, heads the cab for a high cliff. To Be Continued.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- Chapter Three - HOUSE OF MYSTERY - Kennedy and Jameson jump from the taxicab just as it goes over the cliff. Meanwhile, Mrs. Paul Girando (Mae Busch) has received a very menacing visitor, Joe Mitchell (Robert Walker), who has threatened to kill her unless she gives him a large sum of money. Kennedy and Jameson hurry to the Harbor Hotel, where, they have been tipped off, Doctor Gironda is being held prisoner. In a rough disguise, Kennedy leaves Jameson on watch, enters the hotel and rents a room. Seeing a figure in the adjoining room that looks like Dr. Gironda, Kenney enters, but the man is a henchman of the Clutching Hand and attacks Kennedy. - Chapter Four THE PHANTOM CAR - Face-to-face with a half-dozen tough and armed henchmen, Kennedy fights them off and manages to give Jameson his danger signal.Kennedy returns to his laboratory, where he receives a call from Mrs. Gironda, who tells him that Dr. Gironda's secretary, Shirley McMillan (Ruth Mix), has found some important papers relating to the formula. Shirley gets a call, supposedly from Dr. Gironda, and she goes to answer him but is attacked by the disguised Clutching Hand, who threatens her life if she doesn't turn the papers over to him. Kennedy sees Shirley being put into a car by a man. He and Jameson follow the car into a barn and, as they enter, the barn explodes and nothing but a pile of wreckage remains.
