- Young Jim Carter (Kermit Maynard), rodeo rider and pistol crack-shot, in love with Betty Hobson (Andrea Leeds as Antoinette Leeds), soon discovers that he must, singled-handed combat the combined crookedness of Bob Arnold (Wheeler Oakman) and his gang of saloon cutthroats, who are intent on separating Mr. Hobson (George Hayes before he was George "Gabby" Hayes) from his valuable mine property.
Meeting his sweetheart at the annual rodeo, Carter, at Betty's prompting, attempts to save her father, when he discovers him in a poker game with Arnold and his henchmen. Calming watching the game, he does not speak his mind until he witnesses Hobson lose control of the mine in a poker hand in which five aces appear. Carter and Hobson leave, though Hobson threatens to get even. Later at the rodeo pistol matches, two of Arnold's men, onlookers at the match, suddenly crumple to the ground trilled through with bullets. Hobson is immediately suspected and the posse, led by the Sheriff (Horace Murphy), sets out to capture him.
Carter, however, takes matters in his own hands and hides the old man away long enough to give Arnold and his gang ample time to quarrel among themselves over the spoils from the mine. Hobson is discovered in his hideaway by Arnold and left for dead, but Carter, finding the ole man has just been wounded, plots to assemble Arnold and his gang at the ranch house, with the sheriff and his posse men present, confront Arnold with the information that Hobson saw his assailant before he was shot. While they wait for Hobson to regain consciousness , Arnold slips out of the house and rushes to the saloon where he gathers his spoils and makes ready to leave town. Meanwhile Miller (Roger Williams) and Blore (Ray Gallagher), his two lieutenants, notice his absence from the ranch house, also slip away and head for the saloon. The come upon Arnold just as he is cleaning out the safe, and demand their split.
Throwing them off guard with disarming talk, Arnold kills them both and rides away, with Carter in close pursuit, tipped off by Myra (Evelyn Brent), the belle of the saloon. After a mad chase, during which many shots are exchanged and missed, Carter finally overtakes the fleeing villain and, after a furious fist fight, subdues him and takes him back to town to face face the music.
Meanwhile, Arnold's remaining men, suspecting that their boss is giving them the old double-cross and running out on them (which he was) have told the sheriff that Arnold murdered both Stone (Lee Shumway) and Curtis (Charles McMurphy) on the pistol range in order to frame Hobson. A film with many expendable henchmen.
Recovering the mine deed, Hobson presents it to Carter, and this great action melodrama fades out with Betty in Carter's arms as they plan for the future.
