Hong Kong and Amsterdam-based sales agent Fortissimo Films has filed for voluntary bankruptcy in the Netherlands, bringing to a close the company’s 25-year run as a champion of Asian and independent cinema.
An administrator, known as a “curator” in the Netherlands, has been appointed and further filings will be made for subsidiaries of the Amsterdam-based parent company, Fortissimo Holdings.
The administrator is expected to meet with staff in Amsterdam this week.
The company appears to be another victim of a punishing market for arthouse cinema, in which buyers and prices are dwindling, but operating costs, especially for companies with large libraries, remain constant.
Founded by Wouter Barendrecht and Helen Loveridge in 1991, Fortissimo brought Asian filmmakers such as Wong Kar Wai, Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Tsui Hark to global audiences, and also worked with Western indie auteurs including Jim Jarmusch, John Cameron Mitchell and Hal Hartley.

Mood Indigo feels like a line in the sand. For the anti-appreciates of Michel Gondry‘s style, it could almost be taken as a dare. “You don’t like twee whimsy? Here’S Even More Of It.” For fans of the director, it comes across as a test. “You love this cotton candy stop-motion quirk? We will shove it down your throat for two hours (an hour and a half in the Us cut).” In previous Gondry films, flights of fancy came within specific settings, like dreamworlds or sweded movies. The entire universe of Mood Indigo is a cacophony of magical doohickeys, alien practices and other phenomena that go both unexplained and uncommented-upon. Alarm bells skitter around on insect legs. People go on dates in flying cloud machines. When they dance, their bodies contort into weird, often unsettling ways. A contraption called a pianocktail mixes drinks based on what keys you hit on a piano. And...

Take This Waltz (15)
(Sarah Polley, 2011, Can/Spa/Jap) Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Podemski. 116 mins
This is almost the opposite of a romcom: it deals with the prospect of a happy couple breaking up, as Williams is tempted away from cuddly partner Rogen by a handsome, wholesome neighbour. Which is better? The solid, stable kind of love, or the whirlwind, passionate kind? There are some irritating quirks, but on the whole it's an intelligent, truthful drama exploring guilt, regret, confusion and other grown-up emotions generally absent from the summer movie season.
The Bourne Legacy (12A)
(Tony Gilroy, 2012, Us) Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton. 135 mins
It's really the Damon legacy we're talking about here, and whether Renner can plug the Matt-shaped hole in the action franchise. He's got the right mix of acting and one-man-death-machine skills for the job, though this story of shady government operatives...

Ever wonder what happens to the kids in 90s board game commercials who don’t get to yell “I win”? Here’s a new music video from The Spinto Band for a song called “Take It,” which centers around four kids competing in a series of 90s board games (Topple, Thin Ice, then a special third game), with tragic consequences. I empathized more with the kid in this music video than I have with any character getting eaten on Walking Dead. But be sure to stick around for the very end: If you aren’t familiar with the Spinto Band, listen to them! They make very happy likeable music. (Fyi, my inability to describe bands I like with words beyond “they make likeable music” is part of the reason why I don’t write about music too often. 90s board game ads, on the other hand…) (Thanks, Kerri!)...

Justin Bieber should give Selena something that's much for valuable than jewelry, roses or chocolate for Valentine's Day, Maria Canals Barrera, who played Selena's mother on 'Wizards Of Waverly Place,' tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively. Maria Canals Barrera thinks Justin Bieber should get her on-screen daughter Selena Gomez something that's truly valuable for Valentine's Day? An engagement ring? Not exactly. So what would be the best gift Justin could give Selena for V-Day? "I think what every girl wants at 19 -- we want a boy to not play games and be real," she tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively at the Cinema Society and Grey Goose screening of Thin Ice in New York City on Feb. 6 . "Sincerity, trust and respect -- it might be a tall order for someone who is 17 -- is what I would want for her, that mutual respect. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Nitro Circus The Movie 3D Trailer I honestly don't care that I've seen dumb stunts like this before. I'm vibrating from the anticipation to take it all in.

Expect this upcoming Fall season to be a pivotal first for the two-year old Ato Pictures. With Pawel Pawlikowski's The Woman in the Fifth and Dominik Moll's The Monk both expected to make their North American first looks at Telluride/Tiff, the disturb co. will have a Sundance preemed black comedy hitting theatres around the same time. Gist: Formerly going by the title of "The Convincer", Thin Ice reunites Greg Kinnear with Little Miss Sunshine co-star Alan Arkin and this becomes a second outing for Arkin with director Jill Sprecher -- who worked with the veteran actor a decade back on her sophomore film that followed her debut, 1997's Clockwatchers. This pits a financially troubled insurance agent (Kinnear) against a frigid Wisconsin backdrop, and worse yet, the moral dilemma brought about by a valuable violin. Worth Noting: Between feature films, the Sprecher sisters produced television's Big Love and...

It's one thing to watch an eye-popping scene in a CG-laden blockbuster and go, "How the heck did they do that?" It's quite another to have the filmmakers behind those scenes pull back the cinematic curtain and explain what it took to put the footage up onscreen.
That's exactly what we've been doing for some of the biggest movies in Hollywood, from a cinematographer breaking down that epic hallway fight scene in "Inception," to a visual-effects supervisor detailing the digital creation of a young Jeff Bridges in "Tron," to a director walking us through how to build a scream-inducing sequence in "Paranormal Activity 2."

Tonight, Bethenny Ever After took viewers to sunny California during Christmas time, just four days before the Skating with the Stars finale. There was quite a comedic open, with Bethenny getting “juicy” and showing off for Jason…but it was all a hoax! What a sincerely funny moment between the two. All throughout the season, there have been an abundance of laugh out loud moments between the couple this season, but this by far is one of the best. The way that Jason looked at Bethenny once he noticed what she was packing…unforgettable.
“Maybe you should skate full time.” – Jason
“Thin Ice, Ugly Sweaters” overall provided for a lot of comic relief and a lot more family time than what was seen last week. What a difference a week makes…or a week’s worth of editing…or just the holidays? In the previous episode, Bethenny was having issues...

What an unfortunately dull exercise this was. Lovely to look at, but surprisingly boring and even tedious at certain moments. Tim Burton missed the emotional mark with this one. It just doesn’t connect.
Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are good in their respective roles as the Mad hatter and the Red Queen, as can be expected; and Stephen Fry providing the voice for the grinning, evaporating Cheshire Cat, as well as the Caterpillar, voiced superbly by Alan Rickman, both CGI characters, are also standouts; all of those, even if they do seem somewhat adrift within the story, give us a glimpse of just what could have been if Burton dug deeper; but, there isn’t much here to hold ones interest for its near 110-minute running time.
I’m not so certain what audience the PG-rated film was targeting. It’ll probably bore most adults (as it did...

Tila Tequila - Music - More Music Videos
As much as we enjoy mocking Tila Tequila, her new music video is nothing to laugh at. The eccentric (we’re being nice today) reality TV star addresses the ugliness of domestic violence with her new single “Walking on Thin Ice,” and we’re intrigued by her more serious turn. Who knew Tila could be so introspective and sensitive?
Tila says that the video, which portrays the unraveling of a relationship at the hands of an abusive partner, “was created in a way where the woman isn’t just the victim; she is also a survivor. I want women to see that you can get out of an abusive relationship and hopefully do it Before something horrible happens to you or your partner. I could not be more excited to see this film, the final product of a project that nerds who appreciate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hearing about for years. On purpose I’ve been trying to avoid anything and everything about this movie but it’s been hard because it has been everywhere. An alien, Comic-Con, a road trip, Jason Bateman, the laundry list of good things brewing within this movie’s run time is just scrumptious.
So, if you live in the Phoenix area and can make it to a screening on March 15 then send me your name to Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com and I’ll get you entered to win a pair of passes to see this before everyone else.

We hope you enjoy these three reviews from Zoners who were in the audience for the recent performance of Harold Pinter’s “Old Times”, featuring Stephen Colbert and his wife Evelyn McGee-Colbert, at the benefit for the Luna Stage theater.
From Zoner Sw:
On January 9, 2011, I was very fortunate to have attended Stephen Colbert’s performance as the character “Deeley” in a benefit staged reading of Harold Pinter’s “Old Times” at the Luna Stage in West Orange, NJ. His wife, Evelyn McGee portrayed Deeley’s wife in the play, “Kate,” and the renowned, Tony Award winning actress Maryann Plunkett played Kate’s friend, “Anna,” who comes to visit. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the play, it is quite enigmatic and much has been written about its hidden meanings. It is considered one of Harold Pinter’s “memory” plays; and as such, the overall theme is...

Tila Tequila rocked revealing outfit when walking on the red carpet of her album release party. The reality TV star was dressed in a belt-styled bra with black wing strapped on her shoulder. While 'Iron Man 2' star Mickey Rourke is clearly enjoying his resurgence as an actor after many years out of the spotlight, he's plagued by fear that his regained fame could disappear overnight, he said on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7Am Et on ABC).
"I think when you're out of the game for, like, 14 years, and let's say the phone doesn't ring for a decade, I think for the rest of my career I'm always going to feel like I'm on thin ice because I was out for so long and I could mess it all up like that," Rourke said, adding that he has no intention of "tripping over the same rock twice" and allowing his career to be derailed again.

Joy Behar appeared on Jay Leno's 'Tonight Show" Tuesday (March 30) and sent a personal message to Fox News conservative mouthpiece Glenn Beck. "I don't hate you. From the bottom of my heart. I don't give a flying f*** about you."
But would she have him as a guest on "The View?" "Absolutely." If she could have him "spayed and neutered" first.
And would she appear on his show? "No, why? Why should I do him the favor?"
She also reveals that Sarah Palin won't come on "The View" anymore because she says Joy was "too hard on her."
That's hilarious that a tough talking conservative politician is afraid of Joy. Hey, maybe Joy should run for office.
She could scare off all the loudmouth Republican senators and congressmen and then President Barack Obama could get some real changes made during his term.
And here's some big news. Joy is not Jewish.

Did The Dish Rag miss the memo about the hot, fiery place down below freezing over?
"The View's" always outspoken, staunch Republican Elisabeth Hasselbeck went off -- as she usually does daily -- only Friday (March 27) her ire was pointed directly at the right side of the aisle where she resides.
Hasselbeck was fighting mad at Sarah Palin, whom she campaigned for during the presidential election, over the gun-toting crosshairs ad that the soon-to-be-Tlc reality show star released.
"This hasn't been a great week in terms of, I think, the Constitution and where it says that you're supposed to, you know, everybody is, has a mandate to have insurance," said Hasselbeck. "But I think the way some Republicans are handling this is nothing more than purely despicable... It's disappointing to see this come from the Party, and I would hope that leaders like Sarah Palin would end this.

Dame Edna Everage joins the ladies of "The View" Thursday, March 25. Hilarity ensues.
In case you aren't familiar with this "comedienne," Dame Edna Everage is a character played by Australian comedian Barry Humphries. She performs "We Get Along Amazingly Well" with her Broadway co-star Michael Feinstein. It's fabulous.
Dame Edna then shares with the ladies about getting into the dating pool by "seeing Governor Patterson" of New York. Joy Behar then quips, "But is he seeing you?" Heeee.
Also, does Dame Edna call Elisabeth Hasselbeck "Karen?" Must be revenge for that Stanley-Tucci-wife thing.

The ladies of "The View" had another one of those mornings on Tuesday (March 23) when they attempted to navigate those murky health care reform waters.
After bringing up the politcians' questionable behavior during the debate, Whoopi Goldberg was bleeped several times for quoting politicians who used racist and homophobic slurs.
"Never is that justified, ever," Elisabeth Hasselbeck said. "It's despicable to see that from those that are elected officials." While she agreed that the outbursts were filled with "ignorance and hatred," Hasselbeck didn't hesitate to criticize the health-care reform bill.
"I think when you look at the numbers, it was a 219-212 vote. If you take out those that were bribed, bullied, and shut-out, this would have never passed," Hasselbeck insisted, despite Whoopi's protests that the issue at hand wasn't the result of the vote, but the behavior of the voters.

Friday and Sunday, ABC aired a two-episode special reality competition series called Thin Ice, and although it had a voting-related controversy, few people watched the pro skater competition. Canada's Marie-France Dubreuil and U.S. champion Michael Weiss won, although Shizuka Arakawa and Stephane Lambiel were the most popular among home viewers who bothered to watch and vote. After Friday's performances, viewers voted online, and then votes from the judges and studio audience were supposed to be...

There's a lot going on tonight on TV, but most of it is crap that I'm 100% not interested in. We've got five series premieres, three season premieres, and a slew of special presentations. And we get a break from the Ncaa basketball tonight, so all of you who had your brackets sunk by Kansas's loss yesterday can lick your wounds in peace and quiet for an evening. I know that I will be watching "Life" on the Discovery channel because I'm still in Maryland and I want to take full advantage of my parent's HD TV while I still can before going back to my crappy little TV I have in Miami. Here's your jam packed very special Sunday night:
7:00pm: "60 Minutes" on CBS
"Thin Ice: Part 2" on ABC. One hour special presentation.
"The Life of Mammals: Life in the Tree" on Bbca. Special Presentation.

"The View's" Elisabeth Hasselbeck latest career move has left her a little bruised with a pulled muscle "somewhere," she tells Zap2it.
The talk show host took a tumble (or four) on "The View" Friday (March 19) morning promoting her hosting gig on "Thin Ice", the all-new reality show premiering on ABC that night. "Thin Ice" judge Kristi Yamaguchi's quick-and-dirty skating lesson might have left Hasselbeck a bit bruised up, but that didn't put a damper on the talk show host's excitement over scoring this ice-bound opportunity.
"There's no way I couldn't be a part of this," Hasselbeck says.
Hasselbeck and four-time world champion Kurt Browning will co-host the two-day ABC show featuring 10 pro skaters paired as five couples competing for $220,000 in prize money. The scoring from the judges (including Yamaguchi, Katarina Witt and Dick Button) will count for 50 percent, while audience participation makes up the other half.

Just face it, ABC is totally onto something with their live figure skating competition in which professionals shred the ice for the chance to win cash for their favorite charity: themselves. And by adding pop music, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and a voting system for viewers at home....psssshh, who needs the Olympics? If ABC's Thin Ice (which airs tonight and Sunday) is successful, we can surely look forward to the Disney network adding popular votes to other Winter Sports. America's Next Top Luger, anyone?...

Do you think Elisabeth will “survive” her first ice skating lesson with Dancing With The Stars alum Kristi Yamaguchi on ABC’s new show Thin Ice?
Olympic gold medalist and Season 6 Dancing With the Stars champ Kristi Yamaguchi is putting away her dancing shoes and returning to the ice for ABC’s newest show Thin Ice – but this time she gets to be the boss and do the teaching, not the practicing!
And guess who she’ll be teaching? None other than Elisabeth Hasselbeck! The controversial The View co-host will test her skills on the ice in an episode airing March 19th. Considering the mom of three finished fourth place in Survivor: The Australian Outback, we think Elisabeth may have a few tricks up her sleeve!
Elisabeth, 32 is also playing host on the show alongside figure skater Kurt Browning; Kristi, 38, will act as a judge alongside professional figure skaters Katarina Witt and Dick Button.

BBC Worldwide Productions, the team behind Dancing with the Stars, is officially planning an ice dancing reality-competition series for ABC "later this year," according to a statement. This is really happening. It'll be modeled after BBC's Strictly Ice Dancing and will feature six celebrities paired with professional stars from the skating world. Singer and Hollywood star best known for her roles in MGM musicals of the 1940s and 50s
When coloratura soprano Kathryn Grayson, who has died aged 88, sang five songs, including an aria from La Traviata, in MGM's all-star patriotic parade, Thousands Cheer (1943), she began her 10-year reign as the prima donna of Hollywood. With her china-doll features, little turned-up nose and patrician manner, Grayson raised the tone of more than a dozen musicals. Although opera managers did not beat a path to her door, her clear, slightly shrill, small voice carried well on film in popular classics and operatic scenes.
Her classical training led her not to the opera house, but to the radio, in particular The Eddie Cantor Show, on which she was discovered by an MGM talent scout at the age of 18 in 1940. In the same year, she married the minor film actor John Shelton.
