    Storyline

    Edit
Film star Ted Crosley, fed up with movie life, quits pictures to enroll in Midland College, much to the horror of his manager Sam Lewis and his stooge-friend Willie Gumbatz. Ted wishes to enroll in school under an assumed name but Sam, hoping to nip his school plans in the bud, tips off the press and school. En route, Ted has met and fallen in love with Jean Worthington, daughter of Dean Worthington who is counting on Ted's enrollment to save his job. Ted, as the hero of many college and football movies, is given a royal welcome when he arrives. In an effort to make the Midland football team a bigger draw and pay off the stadium debt, Ted is put on the varsity team, where, his exploits don't match those he had on screen, and he is actually a liability. He soon incurs the enmity of Biff Gordon, the school's football hero and Ted's rival for Jean. Biff sets Ted up with a fake fraternity initiation, wherein Ted passes on the tin fraternity ring, taken from a candy box, to Jean. Suspecting unjustly that Jean was part of the hoax, Ted quits school and signs a big radio contract. When the school learns of the hoax, it suspends Biff and the entire team on the eve of the big game. Ted hears about it and his loyalty to the school prompts him to return and square the team with the faculty. They win the big game. Ted, still believing that Jean was in on the trick, boards a train back to New York. Jean learns that Ted is about to lose his radio contract because he can't get back in time, and suggests to Sam that he arrange with the school for Ted to broadcast from the stadium, using the college band and glee club. —Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

    • Trivia
The print Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has been showing since 1994 is probably a print shown in the UK, since an opening frame states "Grand National Pictures Ltd. presents Start Cheering". That company is a UK company which probably handled the UK distribution. Although the IMDb credits are based on that print, it differs markedly from the American version as listed in the AFI Catalogue. However, the print shown on TCM on 5 November 2021 and introduced by Dave Karger and Leonard Maltin has the usual "Columbia Pictures Corporation presents..." on the title card.

The Three Stooges have a couple of funny moments in Start Cheering
This is another of those rare Three Stooges-here being Moe, Larry, and Curly-feature films before their starring roles in the '60s in which they appear in support of the main cast. The actual stars here being Charles Starrett-a Columbia cowboy in his only time away from a western-and Joan Perry-who would eventually marry studio head Harry Cohn and remain so until his death in 1958. Also, Jimmy Durante and Walter Connolly are the second bananas here. The Stooges have a couple of funny scenes: one on the football field and another at a girls' dorm. In the last sequence, Larry noticeably has his usually wildly hanging curly hair slicked back while wearing a fire hat, probably because he doesn't like his curls tangled up in it! Singer Gertrude Niesen and tap dancer Hal LeRoy also provide some entertaining musical moments as well as Durante when doing his novelty numbers. There's also a weird turn by a Chaz Chase. Watch him in it and you'll understand what I mean. I very much enjoyed this one so on that note, I recommend Start Cheering for fans of the Stooges and Durante.
