The Okaloosa News-Journal, Crestview, Florida, reported on Friday 8 July 1938, that the film crew was expected at NAS Pensacola. "Movie actors and technicians, numbering 70 are due in Pensacola this week. The Warner Brothers picture is to include in the cast, Olivia de Haviland, George Brent and Frank McHugh. Lloyd Hacon is director. Many of the scenes will be photographed from the air. After the Pensacola and Naval Air Station scenes are taken, the company will move back to San Diego to complete the picture. The picture will probably be released shortly after the first of the year." (Staff, "Film Stars To Be On Location In Pensacola For Navy Picture," Okaloosa News-Journal, Crestview, Florida, Friday 8 July 1938, Volume 24, Number 28, page 1.)
When the trainees arrive Pensacola there are several shots of planes taxiing and flying. In the background there are mountains, which do not exist around Pensacola. Rather, the scenes were filmed at North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego CA and Point Loma was the mountainous area in the background.
