- Elderly Nora Taylor and Maggie Ryan own and operate a rooming house where they've both lived most of their adults lives, they having inherited it from the previous beloved owner, Miss Minnie. Like its owners, most of the long term tenants are elderly and gentille, unwise to the ways of the modern world. The house has seen better days, and without telling anyone, Misses Taylor and Ryan risk losing it in being unable to pay back taxes. Miss Ryan's daughter, Sarah Jane Ryan, a showgirl, comes and goes from their lives largely depending on the state of her professional and thus monetary situation. Who returns unexpectedly after being away for five years is Miss Taylor's son, Tommy Taylor, a pianist and now aspiring songwriter. Tommy and Sarah Jane's once burgeoning romance is now a relationship of animosity, at least from Sarah Jane's side as she can't forgive him for running off to wherever he was without a word for all these years. Tommy brings with him a friend, Mr. Grasselli, who wants a room and not to be disturbed in recovering from a health issue, he confining himself to his room. In reality, Mr. Grasselli is gangster Chips Maguire, Tommy who has long worked for him purely as a musician in one of his nightclubs. Chips is hiding out from the authorities, and was able to hang both a proverbial carrot and a stick in front of Tommy for Tommy to help him in this, his time of trouble with the law. Who may cause a problem for Chips is Sarah Jane, who also once worked for him and thus could identify him if their paths cross in the house. In all their issues intersecting at the house, Chips eventually believes he has way for them all to benefit from their time together, he always being able to use Tommy as the fall guy if his plan brings him to the attention of the authorities.—Huggo
