"Wiener G'schichten" or "Vienna Stories" is a black and white movie from no less than 75 years ago, the early months of World War II. This film plays several decades earlier though, so no war references about the current political climate. It's a very Austrian film from start to finish. if you do not understand the accent, you may struggle with this movie and even as a German native speaker, subtitles would not be the worst idea. Its director Géza von Bolváry was one of the most prolific filmmakers between 1920 and 1960 were he worked on no less than 100 movie. Respectable number, even if he was pretty much never involved with the writing. One of the writers here is Academy Award nominee Ernst Marischka. He worked on the "Sissi" movies as well.
Most of the action takes place in a café, but I found none of it particularly interesting. It was pretty difficult to clearly understand who is who and make a connection with the characters. Also the music and singing did not wow me. There was a funny moment here and there (like the proposal and instant withdrawal of said proposal), but all in all I cannot recommend it. Interestingly enough, you find Bleibtreu and Hörbiger in the cast, members of famous German acting dynasties to this day.
