Southend Film Festival | Sci-Fi London | We Heart Miyazaki | Rooftop Film Club
Something of a coup for the festival this year: two "new" Peter Sellers films. Freshly restored, having been discovered in a skip, 1950s shorts Dearth Of A Salesman and Insomnia Is Good For You screen at the opening gala, along with another rare Sellers short Cold Comfort. It's the first time they've screened in 60 years. There are plenty more retro treats in the mixed selection, including Sellers and Ringo Starr in groovy 1960s comedy The Magic Christian; Barbara Stanwyck in Lady Of Burlesque, a tale of strippers strangled by their G-strings; and Bette Davis in the Busby Berkeley-enhanced Fashions Of 1934; not to mention punk casualties John Otway and Bruno Wizard, both accompanying their comical biodocs.

Above: Us poster for Forbidden (Frank Capra, USA, 1932)
In honor of the month-long retrospective of the films of the great Barbara Stanwyck starting today at Film Forum in New York, I thought I’d select my favorite Stanwyck posters. Brooklyn-born Ruby Catherine Stevens made 85 films over 37 years in Hollywood so there is an awful lot to choose from. But the remarkable thing about looking back at these posters is how artists seemed to have had a hard time capturing her likeness. The poster for one of her earliest films, Capra’s 1932 Forbidden, above, captures her beautifully, but the poster for Stella Dallas (1937), her first Oscar-nominated role (she never won, shockingly), seems to be of a different actress entirely. As for the sexed-up illustration on the flyer for The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933), in that she looks more like Jean Harlow. Some of my favorite posters for her films are the Swedish and Danish designs,...

Taylor Lautner on the cover of V Man
Happy 72nd Birthday to Lily Tomlin , and Happy 65th Birthday to Barry Gibb. Time to name your top five Bee-Gees songs! Here are mine: 5. "The Woman In You" 4. "More Than A Woman" 3. "Tragedy" 2. "Shine Shine" (Barry solo song) 1. "How Deep Is Your Love"
Cher will become guest programmer for Turner Classic Movies on Wednesday, September 7th, and present four of her favorite films: Follow The Fleet, Hobson's Choice, The Big Street and Lady of Burlesque. I'm going to refrain from any snarky comments about Cher and Follow The Fleet. Playbill.com has a two-day picture diary from hunky Caesar Samayoa, one of the stars of Broadway's Sister Act. Some of the pics are beyond adorable. (h/t Brokeback Bill) Below you can see another quick promo for the new season of Glee, with the emphasis on flying food stuffs.

Revealed Burlesque Under St. Marks, NYC
Alan Watts, British expat writer about Zen, complained about women who said they did not want to be known for their bodies, but rather their minds (even though said "minds" were filled with petty, trivial notions and unexamined streaming and steaming prattle). Revealed Burlesque gives us the female body shorn of any such cerebral distraction. Each of the six strippers was an authentically class act, bearing scant resemblance to the floozy co-workers of Barbara Stanwyck in William Wellman's Lady of Burlesque. Nowadays, with female nudity ubiquitous, these beautifully bodied ladies resurrect a seductive naughtiness that is fresh and -- even yes -- exhilarating to behold. The evening is hosted by Bastard Keith, a young comic/actor/singer/writer, who is charmingly and disarmingly amusing. His contagious bombastic self-delight is evident as he introduces each stripper and keeps the evening moving swiftly.
