    • The famed and expensive Morgan emerald bracelet was recently stolen from the Chicago branch of jeweler Cartell & Co., whose head office is in New York City. The case is yet unsolved. Frank Randall, the Chicago branch manager, learns initially through the media that another expensive piece, the Stonehaven diamond necklace valued at $250,000, is coming through their branch, the necklace under consideration for purchase by San Francisco collectors, Mr. & Mrs. Vanderbrook. Concurrently, Henry T. Adams, a customer at the Chicago branch, because of an issue with his check not yet clearing for a $1,500 purchase, eventually admits to Randall that he is really Everett G. Northrup sent by head office to check on security for the Stonehaven necklace especially in light of the Morgan bracelet theft, and that Randall followed the proper procedure in dealing with "Henry Adams" which Northrup will report back to New York. Northrup will be staying in Chicago until the necklace passes through the branch to the Vanderbrooks. Believing that Northrup may be a con artist trying to steal the necklace when it arrives, Randall telephones head office to verify Northrup's identity. Randall learns that there is indeed an Everett G. Northrup working for the company, but that he is still in New York, meaning the Northrup in Chicago is a fake. As such, the real Northrup comes to Chicago so that he and Randall can set a trap for the fake by Randall assigning Northrup to be the fake's secretary, introduced to the fake as James Dale. In reality, Northrup is a low level shipping clerk in the company, he who is working in cahoots with the fake, whose real name is Jimmy Dale. Jimmy carrying out his plan for the necklace has many obstacles to success, the most pressing in his mind being the unwitting involvement of Claire Winter, Randall's secretary with who he is falling in love and who could be hurt in more ways than one in the process.
