  Steve : Whether you're gonna hold together or not.

  Eddie : [His feelings hurt]  Don't say that, Harry! I'm a good man! You know I am!

  Steve : Yeah, I know you are, but you're goin' all over the ocean. Stay on your course.

  Eddie : Why do you always... Hey, could I have just one? I don't want to get the shakes.

  Steve : Make it short! I want you rum brave, not useless.

  Eddie : [Anxious to get below decks to have his drink]  Thanks, Harry!

• Eddie : You know, you got to be careful of dead bees if you're goin' around barefooted, 'cause if you step on them they can sting you just as bad as if they was alive, especially if they was kind of mad when they got killed. I bet I been bit a hundred times that way.

  Slim : You have? Why don't you bite them back?

  Eddie : That's what Harry always says. But I ain't got no stinger.

• Steve : If you hired a car and ran it over a cliff, you'd have to pay for it.

  Eddie : Not if you was in it. That's a good one!

• Eddie : Could I have a little one, just enough to fill a hen's ear?

• Steve : If I thought you could swim back I'd dump you overboard.

  Eddie : Oh, you're a old joker. You and me's got to stick together when we're in trouble.

  Steve : How do you know I'm in trouble?

  Eddie : Oh, you can't fool me. I always know.

• Steve : Do you know how to handle one of these?

  Eddie : Of course, I know how to handle one! Everybody knows how to handle a gun. All you do is work the lever and pull the trigger. You know I know that! Sometimes you ask such foolish questions. Do I know how to handle a gun? Of course, I know how to handle - what I got to work a gun fer?

  Steve : I just wondered if you could.

  Eddie : Well, you know I can! Harry, sometimes you act stupid. Just plain stupid! Sometimes I think you don't pay no attention to nothin' I say. Is it gonna be that bad, Harry?

  Steve : I don't know yet. It all depends on how lucky we are.

• Steve : Here's what I want you to do. Take this gun and get back in the stern. If there's any trouble, start shootin'. But don't shoot me.

  Eddie : Yeah, but, supposin' somethin' happens to you? What do I do then?

  Steve : How do I know? You invited yourself on this trip, not me.

• Eddie : What do you want me to do?

  Steve : If we're lucky, nothing. If we're not, hook her up and get away from here fast.
