  • Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott is one of those figures in history who by their careers or actions actually contributed to our language - usually without thinking about it. Lord Cardigan, who led the charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War, wore a tight sweater which still bears his name. Lord Brougham, the great lawyer and Lord Chancelor, had a special carriage designed for him, which is named for him. William Burke (with his partner William Hare) suffocated a dozen people to sell their bodies to Dr. Robert Knox, the anatomist. The method of suffocation is still called "burking". Reverend Spooner's weird confusion of letters and syllables is still called a "spoonerism". The edited censorship of literary masterpieces is called bowdlerizing after Bowdler the originator of the censorship.

    Captain Boycott is remembered for not what he did or wore or said. He is recalled for what was done to him because of his behavior to others. In 1878 the lower classes in Ireland began a series of acts of violence against landlords, especially Protestant landlords. The reasons were connected with unfairly high rents and misuse of economic power to force people to do what their landlords wanted them to do. The worst incidents resulted in the murders of landlords (Lord Leitrim in 1878, Lord Mountmorres in 1880) and Mr. Walter Bourke (an agent for a landlord) in 1882. Boycott was a rather heavy handed landowner, who threw out tenants who did not do what he wanted (including voting for Tory candidates). He became targeted for punishment, but what happened turned out to be more effective and less bloody than what happened to Leitrim, Mountmorres, and Bourke.

    On the advice of cooler heads than armed terrorists, such as political leader Charles Stewart Parnell, it was advised to socially and emotionally ostracize Boycott. Instead of threatening his possession of his estate (which would allow him to call in British troops) the locals would not sell him needed food or supplies, nor do work on his estate, nor even talk to him and his staff. This ostracism (now called "boycotting") proved very effective - it led to Boycott, after nearly half a year's struggle, to give up his estate and leave Ireland forever.

    The movie basically tells the story, with Cecil Parker actually playing the central role of Captain Boycott. Parker plays one of his rare negative characters, but he has moments of typical befuddled Parker humor (when talking to a friend about the unwanted London reporters in his home following the ostracism campaign, he notes the reporter for the TIMES appears to be drunk under his dinner table - we see the man's legs).

    Since he is the villain actually (with Mervyn Johns as his sneaky estate agent ably assisting him), we look elsewhere for our hero. Here it is Stewart Granger, as an independent minded tenant of Boycott's, whose prize race horse excites the Captain's greed. But Granger is also a voice of reason. Although he doesn't care for Parnell (he mentions rumors about Parnell's sex life), he hears the great man give a speech advocating peaceful protest rather than violence. This is how the campaign against Boycott begins.

    Alistair Sim plays the local Catholic pastor, who also counsels peaceful protest. Noel Purcell plays an interesting semi-villain - the local schoolteacher who is an accomplished agitator (for violence). And playing Parnell for one scene only is Robert Donat, who gives the great man's speech his normal eloquence, and actually looks like Parnell (unlike Clark Gable in the 1939 biographical fiasco from Hollywood). A little stiff at times, it is (on the whole) a wonderful example of a good historical movie. As such I recommend catching it when you can.

    A year earlier Frank Launder directed the excellent 'I see a dark stranger' which concerns an Irish woman with a visceral loathing of the English. His next film, although sympathetic towards the downtrodden Catholic peasantry, does not go so far as to point the finger at the complacent English establishment or the curse of Anglo-Irish 'absent landlords' but lays the blame solely at the door of one unscrupulous land agent, Captain Boycott. He is played by the superlative Cecil Parker. The character is arrogant, bigoted and blinkered, as were so many of his ilk but this actor's persona makes him far more of a buffoon than an outright villian whilst the character of land-leaguer McGinty played by Noel Purcell is nothing less than a blood-lusting rabble rouser.

    The voice of reason is supplied by the character of charismatic leading man Stewart Granger as Hugh Davin, whose name is perhaps suggested by that of Michael Davitt, noted land-leaguer and republican. He is inspired by a speech of Charles Stuart Parnell, a strong 'cameo' from Robert Donat who has the beard but not a trace of an Irish accent(!) who preaches the effectiveness of non-violent resistance. Davin is assisted in this by the wily Father McKeogh, played with his customary eccentricity by scene-stealer Alistair Sim. The obligatory love interest is supplied by Kathleen Ryan but it is lacklustre and inclined to get in the way, especially as the chemistry between her and Granger is non-existent. The eviction scenes are visceral and the sub-plot of Davin's racehorse is a delightful and much-needed diversion.

    All-in all Launder has struck a good balance here and has avoided Gaelic 'quaintness'. The film is aided by full-blooded performances, the sweeping Irish landscape and a splendid score by William Alwyn.

    Were this film to be made now there would be a lot of axe-grinding recriminations but we hardly need reminding of the terrible injustices committed and the lasting hatreds they created.
  • Cecil Parker makes an effective villain aided and abetted by his agent played by Mervyn Johns.The film effectively brings to life a troubled period in strife torn Irish history.

    This is quite interesting if only for an etymology lesson in the origins of the word "boycott". Cecil Parker is the eponymous gentleman who stokes the hatred of his Irish Tenant farmers in the late 1800s. Charles Parnell (Robert Donat) preaches a more pacifist approach to protest - and so Stewart Granger ("Hugh") encourages his colleagues to down-tools and stop collecting the crops, stop paying the exorbitant rents - and to shun anyone who is prepared to co-operate with this horrendously arbitrary system. Using his agent "Connell" (Mervyn Jones), the Captain has his farmers evicted and this soon leads to conflict between Granger and his love "Anne" (Kathleen Ryan) who has taken over one of the tenancies from an evicted family and earned the scorn of her neighbours... This story is essentially just a vehicle for Granger - his dashing good looks and on-screen charisma shine, as do Parker as the pompous Captain; Mervyn Johns as his really quite weaselly acolyte and Alastair Sim is engaging as the not-so-neutral priest "McKeogh"; but the dialogue is pretty wooden (the star's accent seems a bit confused) and the story of grit and determination lacks any substantial portrayal of either, really. Certainly, it passes 90 minutes easily enough, but maybe just a bit too light and fluffy for the subject matter...
  • This was the film that caught the eye of Hollywood. The Americans saw a tall, dark and fairly handsome man that could lead their movies.

    The best thing that happened to Granger in the 1940's was being teamed up with James Mason as his nemesis. Granger was the protagonist and Mason was the sinister antagonist whom we had sympathy for.
  • The sight of two directorial chairs with the names Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder on their back amounts to a guarantee - to me - that I am about to watch something worthwhile. CAPTAIN BOYCOTT keeps to that parameter, even if I do not rate it one of that famous duo's finest efforts.

    Cecil Parker plays Captain Boycott, a callous and dictatorial British land owner stripping local Irish farmers of their homes and all property with the backing of British police. Parker is convincing enough in his malice until he decides to act as jockey in a race in which he uses the horse he forcibly removed from Stewart Granger, a local lad who does not want to turn violent but can see that the whole situation in Ireland rests on a powder keg. Kathleen Ryan, who would soon have her finest hour in ODD MAN OUT, does not appear very much here, other than playing the part of Granger's love interest.

    Parker is just too plump and un-athletic to pass off as jockey - he provides an unintentionally ludicrous image in the process, that somehow detracts from the seriousness of impending rebellion without providing any actual comic relief.

    Pretty boy Granger is simply not a good enough actor for his part.

    Mervyn Johns credibly plays the part of informant and stirrer for the British, Noel Purcell that of Irish crowd stirrer, Alastais Sim as the Catholic priest with a thick Irish brogue who finds a new meaning for the name Boycott and helps restore social and emotional balance as man of God, but the show really is stolen by the great Robert Donat in a very short part, indeed a brief speech, on how to use shunning to enact passive resistance and isolate perceived offenders.

    Solid cinematography by Wilkie Cooper and engaging script by Launder and Wilhelm.

    Definitely worth a watch. 7/10.
  • Captain Boycott is directed by Frank Launder and adapted to screenplay by Wolfgang Wilhelm from the novel written by Philip Rooney. It stars Stewart Granger, Kathleen Ryan, Cecil Parker, Mervyn Johns and Alastair Sim. Music is by William Alwyn and cinematography by Wilkie Cooper.

    Ever wondered where the term to "boycott" something comes from? The answer lies within this enjoyable historical drama. Story is set in County Mayo circa 1880 and finds Parker as Captain Charles Boycott, a tyrannical British land owner who demands inflated rent charges from the local Irish farmers. With next to nobody able to pay such charges, this allows Boycott to evict the families from the premises. Finally having enough, the farmers, fronted by Hugh Davin (Granger), take their lead from a stirring speech by political reform agitator Charles Stewart Parnell (Robert Donat) and form the Irish Land League. Instead of using violence, they ostracise Boycott to the point where he has to seek outside military help to harvest his crop or face financial ruin...

    In the mix is a love story, naturally, as Davin falls for the sultry charms of Ryan's Anne Killain. A problem since Anne and her father (Niall MacGinnis) have been housed in the farm of recent evictees, thus incurring death threats and ostracisation themselves. Launder moves it along without fuss and filler, neatly guiding a fine ensemble cast to produce quality drama decked with politico intrigue, while the actual location photography in Southern Ireland is ripe with realism and countryside delights. There's a small irritant with British actors doing iffy Irish accents, and some back screen projection work briefly cheapens the otherwise impressive efforts of the makers, but this is a well constructed and enjoyable film with some substantial historical worth. 7.5/10
  • I was surprised to see only 5 reviews of this outstanding historical feature with so many excellent actors in a story well up to the top standard of contemporary adventure and action films. This is an epic explaining the Boycott problem how it occurred and was invented by a series of curious events, starting with a patron's opprsssion of his farmers (Captain Boycott, Cecil Parker perfectly convincing in all his stupid cruelty of narrow-mindedness) and their reactions, led by opposing parties, one for peace and one for action, while Stewart Granger is in the middle, his horse also playing a prominent part in the drama. The main characters leading to action though are Alastair Sim as the vicar. the only one who actually knows and understands his turbulent Irish parishioners, and Robert Donat as the historical Irish leader Charles Stewart Parnell, appearing only in one scene which however determines the whole drama. There are some terrific scenes when the Irish get started in to action for real, and all the pub scenes are a feast to enjoy. There are many characters making up this drama, the Killains, the British soldiers (with Maurice Denham) and all the other agitated Irishmen, Stewart Granger is at his best with horse and all, - and all the others match him perfectly, including the scoundrels. This film deserves better attention as a lasting epic classic for all time.

    Cecil Parker in my humble opinion got his career characterization with the title role in Captain Boycott. This man made a career of playing oafish characters and in this film he plays an oaf who enters our language.

    The key to understanding the character of Captain Boycott is that he doesn't think of himself as evil. He's merely defending the established social order in Ireland as it has come down for generations. The fact that he's on top of the order is merely the good judgment of the Deity who put him there. The problem with these tenant farmers whom he evicts for lack of rent payment is that they need a little military discipline, the kind Parker had in the British army.

    We also have to remember that this is not the factual story of Captain Boycott, though the film does come close to the actual story. It's a romance with Boycott in the background between tenant farmer Stewart Granger and Kathleen Ryan who has come with her family to live in County Mayo and take over one of the farms that Parker has evicted the original owners from. The film is based on the historical novel Captain Boycott by Philip Rooney.

    To put it in language that Americans can understand what Ryan and her father Niall McGinniss are, are scabs. The Irish Land League that Charles Stewart Parnell organized was essentially a union of tenant farmers. Before the Land League, an owner or agent like Boycott when they evicted a tenant family, they merely moved in another until that one couldn't pay the rent. The social position of these scab farmers was at best a tenuous one.

    What Robert Donat in his brief appearance in the film as Parnell proposes is that the shunning be made formal. So Boycott as he puts it has to go twelve miles to find a barber willing to cut his hair. Shunned too are McGinniss and Ryan and their family until the film is over and Granger and Ryan can come together without politics interfering.

    One weakness of the film is the fact that the religious differences are not even mentioned and that's critical. It's rather well known that Parnell was a Protestant and viewed as a traitor to his class for that as well as being a landowner himself. The harvesters that Boycott imports to break the Land League are from Ulster and also Protestants.

    Religion is not left completely out. Winking and nodding at the activities of the Land League is Alastair Sim as the village priest. In fact the Catholic Church turned out for the whole of the 19th century to be a bulwark of the British occupation. Sim's an exceptional and wise priest, but it was only in the following century that the church turned from being against rebellion to a neutral stance.

    Robert Donat is a wonderful Parnell, far better with his aesthetic personality than Clark Gable was in MGM's disastrous biographical film. It was a part Donat was born to play and I only wish he'd done a full length biographical film of Parnell during his career.

    So by the shunning of Captain Boycott by nearly all in County Mayo his name entered the English language as a term for avoiding as a public policy. And the film Captain Boycott is a fine retelling of that tale.
  • "Captain Boycott" is a film that caught me by surprise. I thought it would be a nice adventure story starring Stewart Granger...period. However, there was less adventure than I'd expected AND I ended up learning some cool history. As a retired history teacher, this was mega-cool (I cannot believe I just said 'mega-cool'....that is so unlike me). What I didn't realize is that the film is about the origination of the term 'boycott'...and that boycotts are named after someone...a very jerky someone at that!

    The story is set in Ireland in the 19th century. Considering the potato blight had decimated the population (many migrating abroad and many simply dying of starvation), it's no wonder that the story is very pro-Irish--the 19th century was certainly bad for them. What made it worse were jerk-face (I cannot believe I just said 'jerk-face') landlords who responded to this poverty by evicting the tenant farmers--thus increasing the misery. Fed up with one particularly nasty landlord, Captain Boycott (that was his real-life name!), the Irish set about stopping these excesses through the use of boycotts! Watch the film to see what all this is about and if you like history lessons, you'll probably enjoy this surprisingly interesting and well made film. Worth a look.

    My interest in this period social drama dealing with the harsh treatment of Irish tenant farmers from their British landlords increased as the film went on, as the pacing seemed to increase as well. The farmers have different ways of dealing with these injustices, some peacefully and others more aggressively, especially those who have to deal with particularly aggressive methods of those who own the titles on the land they work on.

    While the title character is played by Cecil Parker, he's actually the heavy, a real life British land baron whose treatment of his tenants led to rebellion, the subject of this film. The lead is a farmer, played by Stewart Granger (several years before his Hollywood stardom), supportive of aggressive force against the injustices. British film star Alastair Sim plays a local priest while Robert Donat plays the Irish hero Parnell in a cameo, much more memorably than Clark Gable. Granger's love interest is played by Kathleen Ryan.

    The term boycott as it is known today was created as a slam to its namesake as a way of letting these power hungry men know that their ruthless injustices towards a struggling public would not be tolerated without repercussions. Certainly a scene where Parker finds out that his household staff has quit on him and abuses a departing maid will indicate why the rebels got more rebellious, culminating in a very gripping horse racing event he's participated in. Great photography, locations and a determined script makes this quite memorable.
