Since launching in Serbia in 2018, Belgrade-based Firefly Prods. has not only quickly become a major producer of scripted series, it’s also raising the country’s profile as a film location with its plans to build a major studio complex this year.
Headed by former BBC news producer Ivana Mikovic, Firefly has a fast-growing slate of productions in the works and a new series set to premiere in the coming weeks.
Firefly is also building a €7 million ($7.6 million) studio complex outside Belgrade for its own series as well as third-party and international productions that is set to begin construction in the coming weeks and scheduled for completion next year. The facility will allow the company to produce around five series a year.
Among its three series set to premiere this year are “Tycoon,” which debuts on Telekom Srbija’s Superstar cable channel March 15 and then on Serbian pubcaster Rts. The...

Allene Roberts, whose film career blossomed in the late 1940s and early 1950s opposite such stars as Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, and William Holden, has died. She passed Thursday in Huntsville, Alabama at age 90.
Born on Sept. 1, 1928, in a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, Roberts beat out 85,000 others in a competition to name “America’s Most Charming Child” run by the New York Daily Mirror. She won $1,000 and a screen test with Warner Bros.
The screen test amounted to nothing, but Roberts and her mother stayed in California, and she slowly edged her way into show business. Among her notable roles was the female lead in Bomba on Panther Island, opposite jungle boy Johnny Sheffield, as the love interest of Humphrey Bogart in Nicholas Ray’s Knock On Any Door; as a kidnapping victim rescued by William Holden in Union Station; and as a young girl who ventures into the...

Following their impressively varied Main Slate section and Projections lineup, the full slate for Retrospective and Revivals at the 56th New York Film Festival have been announced. After last year’s Robert Mitchum retrospective, this year’s edition is split into three parts, paying tributing to the late Dan Talbot and Pierre Rissient, as well as spotlighting a trio of documentaries that delve into cinema history.
“For Pierre and Dan, two genuine heroes, everything to do with cinema was urgent. This year’s retrospective section pays tribute to both men, who passed away within six months of each other,” Nyff Director and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones said.
Talbot, founder of New Yorker Films and longtime director of Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, will be honored with personal favorites from Bernardo Bertolucci, Straub-Huillet, Nagisa Oshima, Jean-Luc Godard, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and more. Meanwhile, producer, publicist, distributor, curator, and cinema polymath Pierre Rissient...

The annual Cinema One Originals festival is just around the corner in the Philippines and by far - By Far - the film that I am most curious about in this year's line up is Phyllis Grande's documentary Haunted: A Last Visit To The Red House. The trailer for this one is recently arrived and it makes for fascinating viewing. Grande takes the structure of a horror film with her crew exploring the urban legends of a ruined building out in a remote location. It's a crumbling and desolate place and it's no surprise at all to learn of persistent rumors of hauntings on the site. And then Grande pulls the rug out by getting to the true history of the place, used during World...

The Red House
Written and directed by Delmer Daves
U.S.A., 1947
*It should be noted that in order to properly analyze the heart of the picture’s themes, certain important plot points are divulged in the review below.
Sequestered away from most of the town they live in, the Morgan’s operate a modest but efficient little farm. Patriarch Pete (Edward G. Robinson), slightly handicapped by a wooden leg resulting from an incident many years ago, remains hard at work but evidently could use some assistance. Enter young Nath Storm (Lon McCallister), a boy from school that Pete’s shy adopted daughter, Meg (Allene Roberts) befriends and fancies. Meg introduces Nath to Pete, the latter reluctantly agreeing to give the youth a job. Whilst the first day goes swimmingly, that evening proves the fire starter that complicates each of their lives. Nath insists on taking a short cut through the woods,...

Liam Gallagher suffered a life-threatening allergic reaction after eating a blue M&M. The Beady Eye frontman, 40, found his blood pressure dropped into a state of anaphylactic shock after he tucked into a bag of the candied sweets during a hotel stay last month and he has now been diagnosed with a serious nut allergy, requiring him to be equipped with a special injection in case the scenario repeats itself. Speaking at the launch of The Red House restaurant in south-west London, he said: 'I've done some stuff over the years but never, never did I think a f****** blue M&M would be the thing that could have killed me. I was in a hotel on holiday and got in...

One of the great debates raging in the land of copyright is the length and renewability of said rights afforded to film studios. With each push, the big studio execs have lobbied extensively to allow them to keep the rights to classic films a few decades longer—however not all films fall under the ownership of the studios. Some end up where all films arguably should after a while: in the public domain. The consequence is that no one corporation is in charge of maintaining a film freely available and so some films remain only in a poor state. Such is the case of Delmar Daves’s 1947 thriller The Red House. It’s freely available in the online public domain for anyone to watch or download, so is there a reason to lay down money for a copy on Blu-ray?

This week, Warner Bros. releases the Oscar-winning musical "Camelot" on Blu-ray. (The release is tied to the film's 45th anniversary.) We have an exclusive look at the special new edition of the Arthurian classic, along with the full breakdown of this week's entire slate of DVDs and Blu-rays. Moviefone's Pick of the Week "The Innkeepers" What's It About? Two low-rent ghost hunters try to uncover the truth behind the real-life (and supposedly haunted) Yankee Pedlar Inn of Connecticut. Naturally, their ghostbusting ways are unprepared for the real supernatural horror that exists inside the hotel. See It Because: It's only with the smallest bit of hyperbole that we're calling director Ti West, "The most interesting new voice in the world of American horror movies." With ominous art direction and creeping camera-work, West's filmmaking style has earned him more comparisons to Roman Polanski and Stanley Kubrick, than the slasher schlock of the genre.

Films that are found within the realms of what is known as the “public domain” are often both the greatest films around (I’m thinking of films like His Girl Friday or even a film like The Night Of The Living Dead) and also the type of films that you’ll find either in the bargain bin at your local Wal-mart or in a given collection of films with the worst visual quality imaginable. However, one of those films has just gotten its first release on Blu-ray stateside, and in a rather masterful quality.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for April.
Night Gallery: Season 3 DVD Available Now
The third and final season (1972–73) of Rod Serling’s underrated series finally comes to DVD. Season 3 (with episodes downsized to half an hour) is generally considered inferior to the first two years, but it still contains several classic episodes. Best of all, Jim Benson and Scott Skelton, co-authors of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour, helped put together a “lost” episode featuring four segments that were heavily altered for syndication. Guest stars this season include Mickey Rooney, Vincent Price, Burgess Meredith and gorgeous Joanna Pettet (The Evil).

One of the last great exploitation films of the ‘80s to receive wide theatrical distribution, this gonzo action/horror hybrid from director Josh Becker features many names from the Evil Dead team, both...

More Dickens and even more Shakespeare, but also new novels from Toni Morrison, Hilary Mantel, Zadie Smith, plus exciting new voices – 2012's literary highlights
January
10 Charles Dickens's The Mystery of Edwin Drood, starring Matthew Rhys and Tamzin Merchant, begins – and, unlike the book, ends – on BBC2.
13 Michael Morpurgo's much-loved children's novel War Horse, a long-running favourite at the National and on Broadway, gets the Hollywood treatment. A tearjerking saga about a young soldier and his horse – it was only a matter of time before it was Spielberged.
16 Ts Eliot prize. Despite withdrawals from the shortlist over objections to a hedge fund's sponsorship of the prize, the Eliot remains the UK's premier poetry award, and its eve-of-event reading is always a treat. This year's shortlist includes Daljit Nagra, Carol Ann Duffy and John Burnside.

Two new indies have begun casting, although no names have been revealed just yet. Joel Schumacher's The Hive, penned by Rich D'Ovidio, has begun looking for actors for a August shoot. The location and date are not set in stone as this production could end up being delayed. The pic "centers on an emergency operator who must confront a killer from her past to save a young girl's life." Also on the shooting block is a new indie by the name of The Red House. Penned and being directed by Gregory Avellone, the pic will lens this June in Altadena, CA. As dictated to Bloody, the 3-D pic centers on a female who inherits a sweet new house in the middle of the woods. She invites a bunch of her friends on a trip to check out the new pad, only to find themselves in the middle of a bloodbath.
