An artist forms an attachment with a woman on holiday in the country. As the relationship develops, his behavior and information about his past cause her increasing concern.
Perhaps even more challenging for Humphrey Bogart than playing an artist was playing an unhappily married man. Bogie had married Lauren Bacall just a few weeks before filming began on this picture, and the two were giddily in love. Bogart would play an unhappy (and potential murderous) husband during the day and return to newlywed bliss in the evenings.
