- Mail courier Rocky Lane (Allan Lane) is on the trail of a stolen authorization for Fort Henry's cavalry to escort a wagon train of homesteaders through the badlands, the province of the ruthless McBride Raiders. The latter wants no settlers in the area and unless Rocky finds the document, they'll be able to drive off the newcomers. Rocky knows that someone in a stagecoach driven by Nugget Clark (Eddy Waller), a secret courier, has the document. He joins the passengers and introduces himself to the others, Rancher Cal Sutton (James Craven), cowboy-hopeful Ted Loring (William Phipps), gambler Ace Durant (Tristram Coffin), saloon entertainer Gloria Lamoreaux (Mildred Coles) return the greeting, but the remaining man, calling himself Homesteader, makes it clear he wants nothing to do with anyone. Rocky decides to stop at a line-shack to search them all. There, they are attacked by raiders and the stagecoach is driven off. Rocky is sure that one of men is actually McBride and he has the document. Ted and the homesteader are killed during the shooting. Gloria drops her handbag and the contents spill out. Sutton picks up a small photo of a bridal pair, easily identified as Gloria and Ace. Gloria snatches the photo from Sutton, puts it on a table and races to Ace's arms. Rocky plans an escape and, when a search proves that neither Ace nor Sutton, he lets them go, certain that one of them will return to the shack where the document must now be hidden. He beats them back there and both return - for the picture - but for different reasons. Sutton takes the photo away from Ace at gunpoint and sneeringly opens the frame and takes out the document. In the ensuing brawl Rocky is overcome. Sutton ties up Rocky and Ace, then directs Jake (Ted Mapes), a newly-arrived henchman to take the document to the fort and tell the cavalry officer to meet the wagon train at India Gap. He then rides off to lead his gang in an attack on the train at Stovepipe Pass. All looks lost but Sutton/McBride forgot to tie up Black Jack, Rocky's horse.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
