  • La Malquerida was fifth in a series of collaborations between the stunning actress Dolores Del Rio and the powerful director Emilio Fernandez, works often assisted as here by the brooding shadowy cinematography of Gabriel Figueroa. The story of a widow's daughter whose suitors meet unhappy fates is enriched by dramatic music and by the Wellesian arrangement of scenes in depth with interesting camera angles. Some especially strong moments: the suitor, about to be shot, posed on horseback against cloud formations by night. The mother lovingly touching the sombrero in her closet that belonged to her late husband. The family members whose sons have been killed converging in a circle on the incestuous stepfather, seen from overhead. La Malquerida is not as well known as say Maria Candelaria but deserves to be.
