As he is retiring, Jonathon Scott reminisces about his long Navy career and the development of the role of the aircraft carrier from the early 20s.
The technical advisor, Capt. S.G. Mitchell, was commanding officer of the fighter squadron aboard USS Hornet (CV-8) at the Battle of Midway, which is portrayed in the movie. He ran his planes out of fuel, resulting in all ten aircraft lost and two pilots drowned. The Hornet does not appear in this film because the point of view is largely from the Yorktown (CV-5), which was sunk in the battle. However, one of the senior aviators, McCluskey, (played by Bruce Bennett), is a clear reference to the Enterprise (CV-6) air group commander, Clarence Wade McClusky.
Jonathan L. Scott:
What are you laughing at?
Pete Richard: When an admiral laughs, it's funny. Laugh!
What has been described as not being possible, the USS Franklin, which was damaged in the Pacific, was in fact brought back to New York to have major repairs done in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Emergency repairs were done in Hawaii before the transit to New York. She had to steam to the east coast of the United States for repairs in New York because all of the repair shipyards on the U.S. west coast were heavily overloaded with American warships that had been damaged by Japanese kamikazes.
