Quantrill's second-in-command, Bill Anderson--aka "Bloody Bill"--was not killed by Jesse James, as is shown in the film. Anderson's patrol was ambushed by Union troops and Anderson was shot and killed by a Union officer. When the officer realized the man he killed was the much-feared Anderson, he cut off his head to bring it back as proof that Anderson was in fact dead.
